Default Thinking of selling my 84 Euro 928

My cousin bought an Rx-7 Twin turbo 93. He made a few mods and let me tell you that car is quick. He had a remanufactured motor ported and polished for 3,200, larger injectors, mid pipe, and some other things done. My point is he spent about 6,500 in total and has a reliable rocket. Whereas for 6,500 I can barely get the seats for the 928. Granted the 928's handling is far superior to the rx-7 and you are driving a beautifully crafted Porsche, but my point is you get so much bang for the buck with an Rx-7. What do you guys think? Keep it or sell it? Reno

Sell it and go rice. I'm sure you'll be happier.

if you really want to go outside and see an rx-7 every time you have to go somewhere instead of a 928... by all means. All I know is that would never be the case at this end

Reno,

I serioulsy looked into the '3rd gen' rx7s b4 I purchased my 928. Here are a couple of key points I found out during my research:

Cons:
- Wenkel engine
- They have a tendency to 'wear' out quickly. <100K may need to be totally rebuilt. Quality wenkel repair costs $$$$ and hard to find.
- Not many were made ( possible parts issues)
- Interior was produced very cheaply and tended to wear quickly.
- Finding one that hasn't been ragged out is difficult to find
- Finding one already modded is $$$$$
- Watch out for engines that have over heated.
- Mandatory compression test upon on-site view. Bring your equipment
Pros:
- Cools cars - Look like mini-vipers
- Fast - With just a few mods can produce 350hp with a curb weight of ~2200 lbs.
- Relatively rare - don't see too many

Good Luck!

How 'bout buy a Yugo for $100, strap a jet on the back of it and you'll be faster then the RX-7!

Seriously though......If it's easy, any dumba$$ can do it......that's the problem, too many dumba$$es out there with fast cars. I'd keep your
Euro.....rare, better looking, much better crowd......IMHO.......

Just remember......there is ALWAYS someone faster

Hey reno aren't you up for a ride this weekend? There is something unique about a 928, not just 0-60.

Do what makes you happy. They are two different cars - you just have to ask yourself, what do you really want. Compare the cars for their good and their bad.

Including worth/depreciation/maintenance/performance/insurance etc ...........

Personally, I wouldn't go rice for a performance car. With a bike yes - with a car no. Mind you, I'm not saying anything bad about Asian cars - It's just a personal preference.

I think rice or American are good options if you like to hot-rod.
If you like to hot-rod, and you have a 928, it can get costly.
If you want to modify the hell out of something, to make it
faster, or handle better, then it is much cheaper with other
makes. I think the 928 is a great car as it is. It looks great.
It handles great. But once you get into the realm of horsepower,
if you want to compete with other hot-rod cars, either rice,
or American, you will be dumping a lot of cash to get any
significant power increases. If you want to smoke Z06's,
M5's, etc, then it will be a lot cheaper to do that with
another car. You have to like the 928 for what it is.
A beautiful car, with great handling, and it is also powerful.
It is just not as fast as some of these other beasts out on
the road. So if you want a car that is more reliable, and
cheaper to make fast, there are better choices. I think the
928 is a great "all around" car. It is great in the city,
with the *automatic*, and it has AC, comfortable seats,
great handling, a great look, and power. It's great on
trips, etc... But if your goal is something cheap to fix,
and is fast and furious, (had to do it) then rice is a better choice...

It all depends what you want in a car.
I seriously considered a 300Z or a Supra when I was looking at the 928.
Turn up the boost on the Supra, and it can be a pretty nasty beast.
And the Z's can also be hot-rodded to pretty insane levels of power.
And they both handle pretty nicely.

They just seemed to be too "common".
Plus the 928 is just a beautiful car.

Everything about Porsche I admire, I've owned a Porsche for the last 12 years. Even though my car is an 84 the suspension, body style, and also the interior were far ahead of it's time. And yes, it is a Porsche. I'd rather be seen in a Porsche than an RX-7. Maybe I need a supercharger. Thanks for all the replies. Reno

Reno!

Don't do it. I bought a '93 TT with the thought of replacing my '86.5 with it. The car is a blast to drive... when it's not falling apart, blowing coolant lines, leaking fuel, warping rotor chambers, wearing out suspension bushings... the list goes on. Made the 928 seem positively, totally reliable. There's a reason he had to get a remanufactured engine for it. They are 50K mile throwaways. Go ahead & buy it, but do not depend upon it for daily transportation. They were rushed into production before many engineering issues were ironed out and never will be reliable cars because of this. Yes, they ARE fun, but there is a price to pay...
