So is the VIN WP0ZZZ92ZG5841241 or WP0ZZZ92ZGS841241?

Paperwork says G5 but pretty sure the plate says GS

I think I'm going to put AC in my garage and start a 928 resto business. Roger would keep me in work for 2-3 years. Sean is already slammed. I could make -- hundreds of dollars!

Not enough to cover even just the electric bill for the AC. Of couse you could, um, prorate/distribute the AC costs over the whole project fleet to make it seem more palatable.

After casually watching what's involved in a real 928 rebuild/resto via Dan H's last car, it would probably be a bargain buying a brand new 928 at brand new price vs trying to bring one like this completely back from the dead. Rog, be sure and do a ton of photo-documenting on your project. I'll find a set of 7" flats too, and trade you for those non-original D90's if they can be replated.

I could swear that the letters 'I', 'O', and 'S' were unused in VIN plates precisely to avoid such confusion...

VIN is definitely an S but does not show in any searches.
VIN using the 5 does show - imported into the USA in 2011 from Germany
Owner registered the vehicle in El Paso TX.
Change of owner in 12/13 to Houston TX.

Trying to find out why it ended up in a salvage yard.

1)Fuel pump quit working, parked it
2)CPS went bad, no spark, car would not run, parked it
3)Ash tray got dirty, parked it.
4)Original spark plug wires caused a miss that the PO couldn't figure out, parked it.
5)MAF went out of adjustment, car started running bad, parked it.
6)Original water pump seized, causing timing belt destruction, parked it.
7)Battery got low on charge, car wouldn't start, jumped it and fried the LH, parked it.
8)Injector relay (Heck, any critical relay) went bad, car would not run, parked it
9)Sun roof would not seal all the way, was raining, parked it.
10)A/C would not keep the car cool in Houston, parked it

Take your pick of any or all the above reasons why it showed up in a salvage yard. These reasons will be at least as lame as the real reason it showed up there.

Cars with any of those failures seem to sit in the owners' garages for a while, then the car gets moved on cheaply, Next guy can't fix it, takes it to a 911 specialist who charges by the hour for watercooled diagnosis. Car still doesn't run when it's flatbedded out of the shop. So then , does it go home or to the scrapyard? Depends on whether the owner paid the bill at the shop I think. And the cars (ALL the cars...) get a reputation for being too complicated, too expensive to own, never seem to run, run poorly when they do.

We need to start compiling the "How to Keep your 928 Alive, for the Compleat Idiot" book, along the same lines as the old Volkswagon book with the similar name. I came across a Chilton's for 356 and early 911, as part of my pack-and-move adventure in June. Less than 100 pages, everything you need to know. Book is in good, clean but well-used condition. I stuffed it into the cabinet next to the 928 WSM's and all the tech pubs and notes on my car so far. Less than one inch of an otherwise full 20-inch-wide cabinet shelf.

A28/09 is 13:33
A28/08 is 14:33

According to tech spec book they both have first gear ratio 3.67...so is one the transmission ratio and the other the rear diff toothcount?

Should also have the higher stall-speed converter, 2200-2600, that will be interesting to compare to the other autos..

I have A28/16, first gear 3.87

huh. I must've missed something back to review thread.

Was it converted to auto? Will answer my own question momentarily...

Was really hoping for that TC data point!

OK, back. Well then, there's an interesting story yet to unfold. Too bad that gearbox wasn't in the luggage compartment....nice gearing..

Only passing on the information covered by the VIN search within Porsche.
Never heard of the option before so you know more than I do.

Poring through the tech spec book keeps my neurons firing...unfortunately they don't retain bupkiss after the fact... G28/10 is def the RoW 5 spd though.
