I had this happen on my 87 a few years back. turn off all the lights dark as you can get. look for faint lights in all the plug and coil wires. very faint. Car was in and out of limp mode and cats would glow. replace the wires including plug covers. problem gone.Good luck

No - that's all new. New for months. Issue was EZK, and not the LH.

(Edit - maybe not... but it is in the EZK where the problem lies)

So.....

Passed smog with great leaps and small bounds. White car is officially coming together very well now.

Only 81k miles, and a newish Grey/black interior restoration almost done - and now the car is legal! Yay.

Below is the print out for the numbers we all seek. Seems high in some places possibly, but here is the true story:

Car was cold. Drove it from work at about 4 or so after sitting for several hours.
Car was driven only a few miles to the test site.
There is no air pump.
24lb injectors and Porken's LH chip is in there.
Stock EZK as the EZK keeps having chip problems.
New MAF
Stock original Cats

I took the sticker off the hood underside in the hopes that they had never seen a 928 and would not want to look too hard with 6 cars in line waiting, and this bore true. They looked high and low for whatever they wanted to see, looked at each other, shrugged, and closed the hood. This was after a very short rolling road test (longer times on this section indicate mini-retests, and is a bad sign) so that was good initial news.

I am happy and ready to get the interior done and sell this thing. Basically all the new owner would have to do is replace all tires, brakes, and shocks. Probably ball joints. I don't like autos, even though GB rebuilt it. Need my manual.

Well, and some paint. But I think I will be fixing that myself.

Oh, and I romped a 996 4S today. Repeatedly.

I wanted to add to this thread as a realistic path or journey, if you will, one 928s that do not get immediately disassembled and rebuilt with 1000s of man hours, but have jobs done on them where they are expected to stay running during the week, and maintained during the weekends. Smaller, more manageable jobs.

I mean, this is still me, so its not ALWAYS going to be like that.

But as you can see from the 7 pages so far, I have done quite a bit of work on the car, front end of the engine, Top end of the engine (twice) with all sensors, ignition, and fuel system pieces replaced (some more than once). It runs really really strong now.

Late last year, the rear bearing on the driver's side went. I parked it since I had other cars and projects. I knew I had the parts do do it all at once, but did not have the room, and the red car had to come first.

Come around June-July, I decided to sell this white 88 before I really end up painting the entire thing. I found a buyer and promised a list of mechanical items to be redone or upgraded before delivery in December-time.

I wanted to chronical some of that here. I will also parse in the pictures I can find of when I did the other work, like to the front of the motor, the top end, interior work, etc.

Here are some more updated pics of where I am now. Redoing the back Suspension, Bearings, Brakes, ABS wires, and general cleaning.

Yes, the jack stands were back to the jack points. I just needed them there while cleaning.

Does anyone have a nice write up of how to properly put the orange rubber pan gasket on so it does not leak or push out? Is there some need for extra sealant?

Last time I did a cork gasket, it did work fine, so I may do that here. But I have two orange rubber ones I could use to update this car.

Some pics of the progress on the front. I don't know what the black stuff is, its not dirt. I will get it white, somehow.

There were a few issues combined that made it tough.
The ignition ECU was bad.

And also at first I was chasing an O2 sensor that was in an x pipe that was made wrong and the O2 sensor was in non-exhaust air.

Thanks, my friend 928 is giving the same behaviour as your car, after engine rebuilt (tbf syndrome)... Cold ok, lazy to rev when Hot, sometimes seems to choke when you open throttle, idle is the only good part of the engine when running

Could be a myriad of things. Each system has to be independently verified and even then it doesn’t become clear easily.
