Default Blinking Headlights

928 1984 manual 5 speed sunroof US (i think)

This is exactly what is happening in my car but the lights wont turn on while they're going up and down.

So far Ive tried the following:

Removed relay I/II because I thought that, that was the relay for the power lights.
I was horribly wrong but when I took the fuse out the lights flipped up and stayed up, they even shined.

For like 4 minutes then they decided to go back down.

The relay was left out the whole time, so then I put it back in and giggled it but it has a nice tight connection. I did some extra research and figured out the
XIX/XX relays are the one for power lamps so I took that relay out to see what would happen.

The relay was nearly imposable to remove from hand and felt like it was getting locked on something, after more inspection after putting it back in i notice the left side of the relay was riding about 1-3 mm higher than the right side.

Lights wouldn't turn on, fog lights and parking lights still did as i amused but main lights wouldn't move.

I put it back in and put my finger on the relay as i turned the lights on, it clicked thats for sure. So I pulled it out again and decided to open it up. On the inside all the joints looked good and the coils didn't seem corroded. I could push the little plate on each end of the coil in fine.

Now every things back together and back in the car, I have no clue what I should do next. It honestly makes absolutely 0 since to me on why they would pop up and work then just die and decide to never come back up again.

Im gonna test the relay so ill post any updates I have

So I am gathering that you made it worse by pulling & reinstalling the headlight relay?

You have probably damaged the relay socket - check all the terminals to see if they are pushed out the back.

Your original problem was either the track/wiper in the motor, one of those motor diodes or the relay, but it seems you have additional issues now...?

The headlights aren't supposed to turn on except when they are parked in the up position - so that is correct

You problem is that the headlights don't recognize when they get to the position where they should stop.

On pre-S4 cars the headlight motors just keep rotating in the same direction for up & down - so this is not so uncommon of a failure. In this instance always start at the motor - not the relay - its just more likely - start by testing the diodes.

You can test the diodes directly - using a DMM's diode/connectivity tester and the car off.

So I already replaced the diodes on the motor and I opened it up and found the little arms for the switches. the third one from the right had some gunk on it so I wiped it off with my thumb, then a paper towel, then a qtiip with some alcohol.

I also filed down connector number 2 on the quick connects because it was oxidized

As for the relay panel I have no clue, its still a snug fit but the first time I tried to take it out it was close to impossible.
