Default PS (HP) line burst - I dodged a bullet yesterday

Crawling along in afternoon traffic and 29 degree Celsius temperature, smoke started bellowing from the front. I pulled over, shut down engine, hood was cold to touch. With fire extinguisher in hand and wife with 2 bottles of water I opened the hood but only smoke was found. There was no fire. By then there were 2 other good Samaritans with more extinguishers. Nothing was seen leaking from under the car and there was no smell of fuel. The oil level was quickly checked and found to be ok. Mess was smelled and determined to be ATF and a check of the PS reservoir found it empty.

Washed down some of the mess, esp around the exh manifold with 10 donated bottles of water, cut the PS belt and carefully drove her home. Spent the afternoon removing the alt and broken line. Cost was $110 to rebuild the line at a hydraulic shop to 2500 psi hose.

Oh, what a bitch to install the line on the rack. Limited space even with the anti-roll bar bolts loosened and lowered. Took 45 mins and a lot of swearing to line up that bolt.

Ah, cost of ownership I guess!

Rebuilding the fuel lines and PS lines done at an industrial hose place with braided lines was one of my things to do when my engine was out. Glad I did it!

Yes same thing happened to me on my maiden drive home after almost a year of work being done on the 928 after purchase. The ATF line running under the car along side the heat shield above the muffler decided to leak about a mile from my house. I was sitting in traffic in front of a grade school ( parents were picking their kids up) when my wife who was following me called and said smoke was coming from underneath the car.
Dodged the bullet. Replaced the entire system with 2500psi, fire retardant oilfield hose with leak proof fittings. In fact all my non water hoses were replaced with high end oil field hoses and fittings designed to withstand just about anything....
Peace of mind....priceless

Was the original line.

I am so ashamed of myself for letting this happen. Since I read a while back of the same line that broke and caused a total loss by fire by a fellow RLister, I intended to change mine since then. But I kept putting it off and doing other things. Its got an alum 928MS rad, hi torque starter, hi amp alt and all could have gone up in smoke for $100

A friend of mine also had the high pressure line of his power steering fail and fortunately no fire.

The pipe was relative new and was fitted by a Specialist Porsche Repair Centre.

On removal it was found that the pipe had not been fitted correctly and the rubber section of the pipe was directly adjacent to the exhaust manifold and was "baked" and failed under full turning pressure with lots of smoke, but no fire.

Total negligence by a high cost Porsche Specialist.
