Default Is this crank scoring OK?

Removed oil pan and am admiring the crank from below.

I read some posts here saying that there is scoring visible simply from machining at factory. Is that what I'm seeing here in first photo or is something more sinister happening?

The pan was completely free of any metal particles, and crank end play was in spec when i checked last year.

Thanks

Adrian

^^ +1

Notice how the machining is not concentric with the bore of the crank centreline, which it would have to be if it was scoring.

While you've got it off, make sure to look at the aft-side of the thrust bearing for obvious wear and that it's there.

Glen I'm glad you mentioned this as I've been looking at diagram in WSM and am not sure where I should look for thrust bearing! There is area where I can see good size metal lip on each side, but I may be looking at wrong thing.

Please can you or anyone in the know indicate with photo where I should look, or just help me navigate in terms of how many rods/pistons along from rear towards front?

Thanks

Thanks. I looked hard at that write-up originally but struggled to get my bearings (no pun intended) from the photos.

But I've had another look at the WSM 13-4 and I think I should be looking for lip of bearing either side of the central rib of the lower crankcase?

If that's correct then I'll post a photo later.

That write-up is correct: even spacing on both sides of the middle rib. Use a big screwdriver to force the crank fore/aft to see the play.

For reference, here's a pic of another block/crank showing the non concentric machining ....

Here are what I am pretty sure are the aft and fore sides of the thrust bearing.

Still seems plenty of meet on it!

It can look as if it's going thinner, but it's just the oil drops that creates that effect.

I don't see a problem there. Your final reassurance will be to check end play ... which is likely to be within spec, like it was last time.

I'm probably being paranoid but would like to know if it's ok to check end play on car in current state - engine is raised and supported at front, and starter motor is out. Is it ok to pry things in that situation?

Yes ..

It takes very little effort, so isn't a problem to do with the engine the way it is now.
