...If you mean miles on the ODO, almost everyone has a broken odo gear, or has already repaired one. It is hard to know exact mileage of those cars, the gear seems to break around the 70k mark on most. The age of the components seem to be more of a determining factor of problems (ie. electrical gremlins such as corroded contacts and such). If you meant fuel mileage about 21 mpg is good.
I have over 86k on mine, but could pass for 186k.

I'm going to interpret this as number of miles before failure.

There are some things that will need replacing, like brake disks and pads, and bearings (wheel and torque tube). I've heard of torque tube bearings being replaced at (what I would have thought is) low mileage - around 70k. Wheel bearings seem to last longer.

Well maintained 928s seem to do 300-500k miles before engine internals require work, although driving style obviously pays a key role.

Now that I have replaced the torque tube, just about everything has been replaced, rebuilt, refurbished, improved, cleaned, upgraded, rewired or repainted by me or the PO.

I still need to pull the pod and adjust the voltmeter POT, fuel gauge to show full, replace the alternator light bulb and replace a bent/noisy electric antenna.

The car has 87K original and documented miles.

Hopefully, all systems will run smoothly for quite a while….. knock on wood!

But to answer your question, about 16 around town and 21-22 on the highway.

My car now as 108000 km.

To answer your question, millage is not the issue.

All 928's now are at least almost 20 years old.
PO's needs to have put A LOT of maintenance (time and $) on the car to have a car without ANY issue.

I have put close to 25k in the past eight years and it is not perfect. Done most of the work myself.
Very happy... But it's not perfect.
It will never end...

The blocks and engine are extremely tough. A local car with >300k kms on it (190k miles) was torn down by the local 928 specialist workshop (ex-dealer mechanic) to fix all the oil leaks. The bearing clearances, ring gaps etc all measured within factory spec for new still - the car has a known and well documented history of running on 20W50 with good zinc levels, along with regular coolant changes, no track time etc.

Being a big V8, these cars aren't stressed by street time - they spend most of their running at low rpm's and thus low wear. There's a few listers here with >200k miles and no issues.

The problem is age - all the rubber and cork bits are pushing 30 years old, so they need replacing, along with anything plastic which has broken/disintegrated (knock sensors etc.).

Very few 928's on the market have had the full rennlist-special worth of preventative/maintenance catch-up treatment (new cam gears, tensioner rebuild, oil pump seals, cam chain tensioners, cam seals/plugs, intake gaskets, various sensors, timing belt, water pump, shocks, engine mounts, oil pan gasket, oil cooler lines, AC work, all coolant/heater hoses, and maybe a radiator). To find a car which has had it all instead of just basic servicing, you pretty much need to buy from a Greg Brown, Sean Ratts etc. customer, or a rennlister who needs to sell. That will save you $10-15k+ right there if you're paying someone to do the work.

Even cars at the top end of the market ($50k+) likely still need all that work doing too, so just factor it into your budget. You might get lucky and find a car which has not just servicing work, but also preventative replacement of all the wear items, but it'll take diligence and patience, and also the nerve to jump fast when it does come up.

Been a few years ago...
I had a client with an early car which had 500,000 miles on it. The engine had never been out or had the heads off.
I did the transmission once or twice...
He bought a 308 or 328 Ferrari...can't remember which one....
He was always sorry he sold his 928 and got the Ferrari....

305,000 miles on mine, nothing other than routine maintenance done on it from the history file I've got.

I Have 125K miles on my GTS - it runs better now than when it had 32K miles on it when I bought it 14 years ago.

With good maintenance I think it can quite easily outlive me. Various issues arise but very few are due to engine wear - it's consumables, accessories & electrical that need the most work.

Mileage only matters if you are buying "an investment" and if you are, you're not going to drive it.

If you intend to drive it, then it's all about condition. Condition will be all about WHO has touched the car not what was touched. You'd rather have a 928 in need of all catch-up maintenance that hasn't been touched than a 928 that's been "overhauled" by someone that isn't very experienced in 928s.

True, I was lucky that one of the PO's only cut the speaker wires to remove the door panel, if he tried to unplug them, he may have broken the connector.
