I am interested in using Plastidip to paint the spokes on the Boxster S Design II wheels on my car. Has anyone used Plastidip? I am looking to paint the spokes matte black.

I actually did a set of boxster wheels in Aluminum color last summer.

They turned out well, I'd post some pics but there packed away in the shed.

Just be sure you get a pail of warm water to place the can in between coats. This will keep it from getting somewhat of an orange peel affect, as the can becomes cold as you disperse it.

 

Follow can directions, the first coat must be a light spray tack coat to avoid runs, wait 10 to 15 minutes and respray another light coat, after another 10 minutes the third coat may be applied heavier, but not too heavy. a fourth coat can be applied as desired to cover and allow the paint to flow. The texture look will flow out and smoothen as it cures. additional coats may be added. Do not wash or use any wheel type cleaners for a few days to allow for a full cure. After a full cure, a silicon type tire gloss product may be applied to darken the finish and give a semi gloss look. Plastidip is very durable, and can be removed by peeling off, it is similar to a spray latex. plastidip can be applied over any suface, even wax.
I love this stuff.
ps: figure to use one can per wheel, also plastidip has a clear which may be applied to give a gloss finish.

 

I was thinking of using plasti-dip to refresh the surface of the rubber S type front and rear spoiler. Any chance of succes on this?

 

^^ not sure but the surface of the spoiler is relatively porous so it might not peel off or give the desired effect, usually plastidip is applied to no porous surfaces like plastic and painted surfaces so it can peel off.

 

If my wheels are 17" and am only focusing on spokes, how many cans will I need for all four wheels?

 

Just did the wheels on my son's Spec V. As with any paint project, prep is key. Thoroughly cleaned with brake cleaner and simple green. The can suggested four coats, first one is a tack coat. 30 minute dry time in between. 4 hours after the last coat to cure. We used clear as the last coat because he wanted a semi gloss finish. Surprised how well it went on considering the spray can application. Hid most of the imperfections and gave a nice matte finish. Like OTR says, the finish really flows nice as it dries. My son bought four cans of Anthracite and one of clear. Ended up using all four cans, (only sprayed the face of the wheels) but didn't empty any of them. The first half of the contents applies brilliantly, from there the application quickly degraded. Didn't use the warm water trick MJRocket mentioned, may have helped. I give the stuff a thumbs up. Very surprised how well it applied and the overall look. Curious to see how durable it is.

 

One can per wheel is plenty.

 

Based on my experience (I did my whole car, but not the spoilers) it will likely work OK, but have some xylene around if it doesn't - that will take it right off.

 

i dipped the Hella Supertone horns and the mesh of the side vents (black) on my other car two years ago.

i was not expecting it to stay adhered to the mesh, thinking the mesh would be too small for it to stay put, but its still on there after several winters and many carwashes.

 

Don't Andy. (i've used it) It will NOT hold up on wheels.

it's not even close to being the correct material or finish for wheels.

You'll be wasting your time and removing it.

Your wheels should be taken to a powder coating professional for
a proper and lasting finish.

 

My car is a garage queen and does not get driven very much, which may prolong the life of the wheel application.

Its an awesome product. I did my wheels on my 944 and they where bitching. I would apply at least 4 even coats on each wheel, would take 3 cans. That should be enough:-)
