Keith, yes we have met and yes I am a part of the 928 Houston group and have been at the Christmas dinners the last 3 years......but, I have not been really very active with the group for about 18 months, due to a little fall and a long recovery....... should be more active henceforth.....

Of course, "close" has a certain degree of value. The car that is close is a better bargain than one 500 or 1000 miles or more away, in the same condition at the same price. Duh! I would still take 20 one hundred dollar bills to the guy and offer them to him, then if he goes for it, and I think he is going to, take it home; THEN start following some of the advise these guys are giving you about how to deal with it.

Tell the seller, if you wish to go there, that if he gets it running you will give him the $4000, or maybe even only $3000. And, be prepared to.

Thanks very much for all the advice and sharing your stories - all are greatly appreciated (and informative) to say the least.

Geography plays a part in my interest in this car (there are just not many in our end of Canada) - but a trip to Montreal / Toronto / eastern US to pick up a better sorted out 928 is not out of the question.

Have to admit I am somewhat undecided at this point ... the deal maker in me is tempted to see just how good a deal could be made on this car (ie ... the 20 x $100 bill approach) but my practical side says take the advice to spend more money and find a better car I can drive and enjoy as I am making incremental improvements to it.

Will keep you posted.

Well, I thought it was implied, but I can see it needs to be more obvious that you finish the negotiations before testing. And yes, this is what I do with a non-runner. I make the deal, contingent on my getting my tools on it. No deal, is no deal.

I've bought three cars this way, including a 92 968 for $1800 right here in Dallas.
