before you go further,
I would drain the oil,

Then use a flashlight or bore scope to inspect the inside of the oil pick up through the oil drain hole.

You wouldn't be the first to have an errant rag drop into the pan after doing an intake refresh,
its quite possible the the towel went down a return hole and is now in the pan clogging the pickup.

when you get two different warnings from the same sender then its probably telling you the truth their isnt sufficient oil pressure.
You can use a coat hanger and put a small hook on the end of it to get it into the pan via the drain hole

I supposed what you are suggesting is possible, but then I would really be worried where else the sealant has taken up residence other than the pickup tube on it's way to the sump.

What kind of sealant did you use?
If that is found to be the case I am concerned too! I used RTV

Thank you, valid point. Pretty sure I didn't lose any rags, never put any on or in the open cams only place one could get in would be oil filler hole on top of crank case but then I used some masking tape to cover the hole rather than rags when the oil filler tube was off.
I don't have a scope, I shall drop the pan anyway, it was on the list of things to do, may as well do it now. Have to wait to get the right flywheel lock to go any further on the front and if I do find metal in the pan, not much point changing the belt. At which point if I still haven't found the reason it will have to wait till I can afford either a replacement engine or parts to rebuild this one.
Looks like the rack bushes need replacing too, done a few now and mounts so it will only take me a couple of hours to get to a point where I can remove the pan.
Wedding this weekend so might not get much done but hopefully will get the pan off before then.

Default Problem found

Thanks for all the help.

Found some blue paper towel in the sump mostly blocking the pickup, no idea how it got in there, I used tape over the oil filler neck hole when that was off.

At least I know now and the good news is no metal in the oil or on the sump plug so there must have been enough oil getting to the bearings but not to the lifters hence the noise. Will make sure to crank the engine with the fuel pump fuse removed and plugs out when I get it all back together and before putting any load on it

The pan gasket needed doing anyway, Just had to do it sooner! Most of the bolts were less than finger tight and it was real messy under there. Will still have to check the pressure sender, thermostat, pressure and bypass valves for paper in them but other than that relief at no damage and annoyed for being an idiot.

Nice call, Mr. Merlin. I have found small pieces of rags and paper towels on Saab oil pump pick ups over the years. I guess some people tear off bits of rags/towels to block small passages and intake ports while making repairs. Not a good idea!
