Default Fuel tank capacity ?

Can anyone tell me how much gas needs to be put in the tank (empty) for the fuel gauge to register ?

Can't say I've tried that but you will have 3-4 gallons left for the empty warning light to trigger.

.., thanks Sean, just got the car back from the shop after some fuel issues I had, all sorted now. They removed all the gas from the tank, and initially they put around a gallon back in, I subsequently put another 5 or so litres in, but the gauge wont register, although it occasionally flicks slightly.
Just wondering if I,m expecting too much from the gauge with relativley little gas in there, I asked if they had disturbed the sender from the tank, but they had,nt. Obvious answer is to fill the tank, but don,t want to do that incase I have to remove the sender, although as previously mentioned, there does seem to be a slight bit of movement on the needle while at the empty section of the gauge. So basically, How much gas in the tank does it take to register at the gauge ?

There is the reserve after the light comes on. On my 90S4 I once ran it until the range showed -35 miles. Just could not find a gas station. It made it under it's own power. Since then have not pushed it below +30 miles on the range.

According to the owner's manual on my 90GT, the the low fuel light comes on when the tank has 12L or less (3.2 gallons). So I would think you need close to that to make the needle register anything. The tank capacity is the same on all years, just the sender is different on 89-up.
Total tank capacity is 86L (23 gallons) which includes the reserves mentioned above.

Cheers!

FWIW the 84 tank capacity I believe is listed as 19 gallons. I'm pretty sure the last time I put fuel in it when the fuel warning light came on, I pulled into a gas station pretty quickly and put in about 17.5 gallons. So don't count on 3-4 gallons left.

"FWIW the 84 tank capacity I believe is listed as 19 gallons"

Nope. As FLYVMO said, all tanks are the same. The '85 spec book says fuel tank capacity is approx 86 liters, which is 22.7 US gallons, including 8 liters reserve, which is 2.27 US gallons.

They are all listed as 23 gallons. Link to 1984 owner's manual: https://docs.google.com/file/d/0BzC7...it?hl=en&pli=1

If the tank only takes 17-ish gallons there is probably a venting/kinked line issue. I've put 20 gallons in at the pump plenty of times.

EDIT: Wally types faster than me

Cheers!

The gas tank looks like a teapot. You fill it through the spout. If the vent line from the top of the tank main body is pinched shut it traps a big air bubble in the body of the teapot while the spout fills up and kicks of the filler nozzle. That air bubble must be around 5 gallons The vent line is supposed to pass through a hole in the rear frame rail and end up near the top of the spout

Thanks Wally. I could have sworn it was 19. Well that makes sense then. My light came on at just over 17 gallons. That i know for sure.

.., just had a look in my UK spec owners handbook, and it says 19 gallons (86 liters).., maybe US cars were different ?

Looks like I,ll just have to put around 4 gallons in the tank, and see if the needle registers, it was working fine before the fuel system was cleaned out and they did,nt touch the sender, ?

19 Imperial gallons. 5 quart gallons, not 4 quart.

If only it were that simple. US and UK fluid ounces are different.

FYI the fuel tank sender is mounted in the top of the tank, so it can be removed without incident even if the tank is full.
