Just to give you an update. I have the Timing Tool. I thought I was doing a good job then I put the engine back to TDC. The passengers side was right correct. The tool lines up, the notches lines up. The driver's side is off many teeth to the right. I asked around someone one said to turn it back to 45 degrees slowly and start over. What do you all think?

If the timing marks on the camshafts are off so much in correlation to what the crank shaft says, there is a good chance you have tapped some valves.

I just put this thread and your PM together and if what you are saying is correct, you have got to get everything lined up at TDC and ensure things are right. Crank at TDC, both cams at TDC. If those do not line up you've got some major issues. 18 teeth off on the drivers (left) side is going to result in tapped valves and some major engine work.

Take some pictures as to what your cams and crank show when you put them to TDC.

sean right now the belt is off and the engine is at TDC. The passengers side cam gears notch is lines up with the notch for the cover. The driver's side is off.

Take the Porken timing tool off, it's of no use when the belt is not on the car.

Put the belt on the crank, then oil pump gear and move the drivers (left) cam gear in to position and put the belt on there. Using an assistant or ensuring the cam gear stays in place on the drivers cam gear, run the belt under the water pump pulley and start to move the passenger cam gear (right) in to position and then put the belt on.

(this can be a pain in the *** to get right so take your time, and don't get pissed when you have it a tooth off, do it until you are on it right)

I don't know what belt tension system you are using, but at this point you should be able to either pull the pin on the PKTensioner or start to tension the belt using the factory tensioner.

Where are you located? If someone is close, it looks like you could use some assistance.

thanks for offering help. I had one of my friends come over. The timing is on. I just have to double check everything, put all the covers back on, double check everything and then start the car. I will be on work on it this weekend. I'll let you guys know how it goes.

I am considering making a new hall sensor bracket or buying an '87 (the one I saw did not have the connector holder). I think what might have happened is my bracket got bumped when installing the valve cover. It could have set the hall sensor to be tilted a few degrees. This could have been enough to make it crash into the timing rotor. If you look at an '89 bracket it has a holder for the connector on it. Any opinions? I also really don't feel comfortable with the way the wires have the U-Shaped rubber piece that is supposed to seal it. It just does not seem like a good design to me.

Alright after reviewing some post I decided to install the old hall sensor and the old bracket. I carefully placed it on. I took a picture of it installed. Please tell me if you think the small gap on the non bolted end is safe.

Just for an FYI on something similar to this.

I just got done diagnosing a car with similar issues today, and both.........repeat BOTH........cam gears were held on by bolts that were finger tight.
