Hi Mickster, Leon Speed, and donaheyzhen,

Appreciate your responses.

Mickster/donaheyzen, so I am correct in my thinking. The type2 sensor is the cold weather injector sensor. I was sure I was right but was starting to doubt myself. I had fun and games with that last year. Works fine now, starts and runs perfectly.

Leon Speed, you are like me, it is weird, I am thinking just electrical. The old girl is 25, likely to have a problem or two, just wish it wasn't so perplexing.

I did read a post at another site of a fellow from New Zealand who has heard where the plastic fins on the water pump (don't want this to be the case, as don't want to rip the motor apart and fix a water pump) are fine at low speeds, but at higher speeds, they slip a little on the shaft and don't have enough flow for increased heat generated. Already had to repair the bearings in my torque converter laying on my back on the driveway. Learned a lot, and did it for about $300.00 with the help of a fellow from California who had taken pictures of every step. Didn't have to drop the rear suspension like most think. Another fellow, Bill Ball said the transmission could be moved back just far enough with a bit of force to get the torque tube out of the way....he was right. Job took about 4 hours tops.

I am an accountant not a mechanic, but am a testament to great help available on the web, and no fear, allow a repair shop to be avoided for pretty much everything.

Have a great weekend guys

Just curious...how long does it take for the alert portion to trigger? Within minutes after starting? After extended stop and go driving on a hot day?

Good on ya for doing the torque tube. Sounds like you're fast, too.

BUT, I wouldn't worry about the water pump impeller until I'd checked the actual temps after a high speed (high heat) run. Based on your first post, I'm betting it'll still be running cold.

If it is, you can't be sure about the thermostat until you take it out and test it in a pot of water as it heats. A light directed at the suspended thermostat will shine though just as it begins to open, which is otherwise pretty much impossible to tell, imo. Note that temp and the full open temp. I love a lab thermometer for this purpose but an IR reader will work fine. So will one of those temp probe/timers for the kitchen, like this:
Amazon Amazon

Do you remember the temp spec on the one you have in there?

Hi 19psi and Fogey1,

Alerts usually happen after driving for a while, not after just a few minutes.

The other night when the alerts happened were on a drive out to a spot about 20 minutes outside the city. Much of my drive was at about 50 mph, but I did get up to 60mph. Was about 80 - 85 degrees farenheit out.

On the trip out there, the alert surprisingly, did not appear. I was super happy, figured I had fixed the problem. This was from a cold start.

I was at the club for about 2 hours, so the car was still warm when I came out. The needle on the temperature gauge was not at the bottom of the gauge, about 1/4 the way up. Took the exact same route home, at about the same speed, and the alerts came on about 2 miles from home. Pulled into a lot and lifted the hood, and took the readings I posted earlier with my infared thermometer.

There was not steam, no excessive noise from the engine...didn't seem to be excessively hot.

I will see if I still have the box from the thermostat I put in.

I'll take it for another drive tomorrow. Too hot today, about 105 farenhiet with 49% humidity !!!!

I'll get back to you, thanks for your interest.

This might sound dumb, but I think you have a short or corrosion in the line. It causing some issues... I saw this on my cab...

Hi Spun,

Nothing sounds dumb to me. Do you think the corrosion may just be where the brown cap fits onto the sensor? For the short, did you have one? If so, how did you find it?

I think I saw on your post you have an 89 too. Have you ever had occasion to measure your running temperatures? Where does the needle sit in your gauge?
Thanks for your rsponse

Have the same year car. Was having similar issue (instrument panel saying car is very hot) and did everything you have done. Took temp readings and they all indicated car was fine. In the end changed the instrument panel/pod for a secondhand one when I did LED conversion and guess what? Problem solved!

Hi Lucky17,

Good to hear from you and your experience with the same year car. Another option to check.

Thanks very much for your response.
