I had the same problem caused by a broken wire in the door. You should be able to check continuity at the connector of the door harness that is tucked up under the left of the dash without having to remove the door panel.
I have the workshop manuals. I have having trouble understanding where the temp sensor wires actually go to under the dash. Nothing appears (from what I can see below) to have moved or be unplugged, messed with, pulled a part, etc.. Unsure what to do or how to move forward. Also, how do I check connectivity if I can't get to the wire inside the door? Would I need to remove the mirror or entire door panel?
Any help is appreciated. I will be in Anaheim on Saturday at 928intl so could have a look then as well with an expert if needed.
Bryan,
I have not traced the wires from the door to the dash, but I would assume the wires should exit the black plastic sheath that you see when you open the door. Follow the wires that come out of it. I remember reading that on the later S4's there is a connector either under the dash or behind the side panel. The earlier cars did not have the connector and the wires were connected into the harness directly.
I hope that helps.
... The sensor readings range from 60C (750ohm) to -40C (100kOhm). ....
Bryan .. based upon Hiltons Ohm specs above, Phil is correct. It would be expected that an open circuit (which is infinite resistance) would give an end of scale reading on the dash of -40C (100kOhms +).
As per the wiring diagram, the two wires from the sensor (Bl/Gr & Br/Gr) go back from the door to under the dash. They go through the door connector first (in front of the door under the dash), then the Bl/Gn goes to the instrument cluster, and the Br/Gn goes to the CE panel.
One of those connections has to be loose/disconnected. Maybe you disturbed the cluster or door connection when you were under the dash?
