Default 1984 Porsche 928 for sale - Chicagoland Area - Is it worth a look? If so, how much?

Here's what I know:
1984 928 black on black
milage unknown
5 speed
just put 2,000 of maintanance, timing belt, pump, etc.
Sounds like it's good to go for now in terms of any major maintanance. New Z rated tires, brakes, fluids, etc.
Clean title.

Body/Int very good

Asking 6,000

Is it worth the price? If I show him cash I know he'll go down to low 5's. Would it be worth it? Assuming the condition is good and it drives nicely in all aspects. What's a low budget 928 like this supposed to go for? Should I walk away because of the miles unknown?

Thanks

I forgot to mention, he said the wheels are "Gold Iodized". He also said they came like this from the factory. Is this true? I've never seen stock gold rims on a Porsche only those BBS style on 944 Turbos at times.

The wheels sound like they are the factory "flats", over time they can take on a kind of gold-like appearance.

If he gets into the low fives, it might be a good deal. Does the owner have documentation of the recent maint.? Any records at all to try and estimate the mileage? Even if there is zero documentation, the price sounds fair as long as the car is in good shape. There is a really good 928 buyers FAQ posted here

Good luck, and keep us posted.

I forgot to say, the AC is busted. I'm not too worried about that anyways. Still, does that greatly effect the price? The mileage is extremely low. Something in the 30's so it's not even worth guessing. The only maint he has documented is the 2,000 he recently spent. I'm thinking since all the major stuff seems done I can purchase it and atleast drive it sparingly without too much worry. Wishfull thinking? I'll try low 5's. A huge part of this all will be answered when I see it and drive it. I just want to be sure the price is fair. Thanks.

Going by what I have sold 928's for in the past,(a 78 928 in 1994 for $4000, and a Euro 83 928s in 1997 for $4500) and what I just spent on my 85($3000), I would think that the high 4's or low 5's should be okay. Keep in mind how expensive the AC could be, should you desire to fix it. Plus, keep in mind resale value(if that is an issue) down the road. Cost aside, your gut feeling will probably guide you when you take a look at it. I know mine does.

Keep me posted on the purchase,

Ron

Check the archives on '84s as there is not a lot in the manuals for wiring diagrams. Might be something to think about if there are any electrical issues with the car.

Default what I paid

I paid 5200$ for my 84.

I bought it a few months ago.

I was looking for a long time and was coming across some duds until I saw/drove this one.

It needed rear tires, recharge A/C (in this case - it DID only need a recharge), retension of T-belt (was recently changed), and a radio.

Silver with black interior - Automatic.

All electrics functioned.

99520 miles

I have since changed almost all bulbs. Wiped down all the interior leather (mine has a lot - did they all have full leather interiors?). Bought new rear tires.

Now, I need a front windshield as I lovely truck spit a rock out and I've got a star the size of an inch on passenger side.

I saw a lot of cars proclaimed as "Perfect!" that scared the crap out of me. Then there were others that the owner claimed, "It looks good. It runs good. It sounds good. What else do you need to know?"

Seriously.....the guy said that!!!! Funny, that same person, while getting into the driver side seat exclaimed, "I hate these Japanese cars!"

It was very hard for my wife and I to fathom the ignorance...... and they still thought we were interested in the car...

Did I pay too much? Someone else may think so, but not I. The car was bought to be driven and to be loved. What price do you put on pure admiration?

Forgot............

Earlier in my search for a 928, I looked at a black on brown 83 in the Summerville, SC area.

The add listed it as having "Euro heads."

Upon arrival to view/drive the car the owner presented all documentation and the details of the engine rebuild with all Euro' components.

I tried to look for the engine code, but at the time wasn't sure where exactly it was - so I never got the chance to confirm what the original block was ---- but according to paperwork, it was stocked with Euro stuff now.

Anyhow, the owner was asking 5500 firm. I was very intested until he pointed out that the waterpump was leaking. After my test drive and pulling back onto his driveway, the leak was not small. The fluids were dripping quickly and constantly. That scared the crud out of me and I told him I was not interested.

Looking back, I'm unsure on what I passed up. Was it a Euro S? Was it the 310 hp gem? (it was an auto)

No fret though, I love my new ride!

I paid more for mine, but got what I wanted... less the BorgWarner tranny.
There are so many variables and compromises, but in the end, if it is what you are looking for it is worth it.
Being there are so many compromises, don't compromise too much.
