Default Corroded Ground Strap

Changed my ground strap this weekend. Although the original that was on there appeared to be in great condition, the insides were pretty corroded. Bought a replacement from 928srus that fit perfectly (bottom strap in photo). The car seems to be idling better and the dash is brighter. I wrote a short article on it too with before and after photos (link below).

Is your battery vented adequately ?
This will decrease the likelihood, or increase the time, of corrosion due acidic vapors.

My 82 Weissach was missing ever so slightly - changed the ground strap and no more issues. Used Deoxit on the CE panel and all lights are now bright and all electrics work as they should. A replacement ground strap should be on everyone's list - cheap maintenance at $28.25.

The car is pretty much stock. There is a small vent hole in the front of the box that is not obstructed. Any venting tips?

Definitely agree. $28 gives you a great bang for the buck. If you look at the picks in the link, the voltage improved a good amount. My car is a 91', there are much older ground straps out there.

If you feel along the North and South upper edges of the battery you should fell a small hole. Mine has two for each group of cells (maybe some batteries have the holes is different places ?). I have a small tube adapter snuggly plugged into the holes. I attached a clear vac line from hospital tubing to go through a hole I made on the front/North face of the battery chamber - my factory opening had to much stuff going through to allow both vent tubes to go through without being compressed. You want to make sure your vent lines are smooth/laminar straight, and not bending/kinking so vapors can 'drift' out - they're not getting any help in their evacuation. If you make a hole put a nice rubber grommet there so no sharp edges.

I ran a plastic hose from the battery vent to outside of the battery box.

It is wise to plumb the vent tube all the way out of the battery box & run it back under like a mini draft tube. If you have 2 vent ports on the battery T them together to vent both the same way.
