Default No power to starter relay 85

Okay, I have next to no power on point 85 of the starter relay which I should get if I put the gear lever in P or N. It is odd, the multimeter counts slowly from zero to 400 mV and then suddenly start back at zero. In gear D,2,3 it does stay at zero volt.

I did once burn through the brown-yellow wire connected on U7 that goes to point 85 of the starter relay. I replaced that part, only the brown-yellow though.

I managed to trace it back to the rear where it is supposed to connect to the battery over a grey-yellow wire before it goes over the gear switch and there is that 0-400mV thing going on too!

Anyone know what to do now? Please? Is the grey-yellow wire perhaps also burned through and shorting against the frame?

I made a bunch of pics to illustrate.

First, replace all of your fuses with copper ones.

It could be the reverse safety switch that keeps your car from starting when in reverse. Check yours to see if it is within spec if not, replace it and see if that makes a difference.

umm your testing the wrong wire in the first picture the burned wire is in the end slot then you feexed it with the black wire this should connect to the purple wire on the other side of the connector your testing the second wire in.

At any rate make sure you test all of the wires to see what one has continuity to ground if you find one then it needs to be investigated before applying power.

add some deoxit spray to the fronts and backs of the fuse holders and get good fuses as previously mentioned

Ah yes I am testing the wrong wire. After a second look I think the brown wire right next to the previously burned brown-yellow wire, that goes straight to U7, should have 12 volts.

I will also check all related wires on continuity to the ground, good thinking.

Hmm, reverse safety switch huh? I didn't realize there was a difference between R and 2,3,D with the safety switch. I'll try that too.

But first I definitely need power on that brown one. Thanks for thinking with me! And pointing out I was testing the wrong wire

The terminal 85 on the starter relay GROUNDS through the starter interlock (park) switch. You have been looking for the wrong thing all along... make sure you know what you are doing before you try to do it...

The starter relay coil is fed (on 86) from the ignition switch 50 starter terminals (battery voltage) and grounds (on 85) through the transmission switch. Seems like the ground might be dodgy.

Measure that terminal again while trying to start... if it goes to 12v you have no ground on the transmission switch and thats what you need to look at. If that wire burned up the same current went thought the ground wire there too... I'd look at that.

Oh wow, okay I'm still a noob That's why you guys are pretty much priceless.

So I tried point 86 on the starter relay and it hits 12 volts if I turn the key completely. So that's good!

Hehe, I was testing the brown wire on ground and it was grounded! I was like, wtf, I have a problem. Then I tried other brown wires in the boot and they were all grounded! I was like, omg, I'm completely ****ed! Why is my car still running? That can't last long! But eh, yeah, so brown is supposed to be ground. Good to know!!!

Anyway, I tested the ground in the transmission switch with my beeping multimeter (literally) and also the connection in the back. Made a video so you can hear the beep whenever it grounds.

And well, there you have it, the plug in the back was rubbish and the gear lever isn't great neither. Although that does work in N, not always in P, only if you put it slightly before P
So I wiggled the connection in the back some more and discovered that the female part of the plug was a bit dirty and not that tight around the male plug. So I scratched it up a bit and bended it a bit and now it's nice and tight. No wiggling stops the beeping now!

So all in all, my car is sorta fixed. Which is already very cool!!! Thank you Merlin, as always! And Alan no to forget. Thanks! I just need to remember to start it in N, not in P. Any tips how to fix that perhaps?
