I lived in BHM for a while and was able to get my BMW 2002 on the track during BMW Oktoberfest...what an experience! The museum does exercise their cars and bikes occasionally on that track so it's not all that sad.

It is a 1987 928S4. One of Mr. Barber's old cars. This car gets used quite regularly as it is easy to start, fun to drive, and doesn't cost a fortune to operate. The museum boosts just about everything on display can run and drive within an hour. (There are now dozens of museums across the country that take pride in running collections, Collier, Mullin, Chaparral etc.)
Here is a good video of the museums Ferrari 158 being driven by John Surtees just yesterday at Goodwood.

I have to disagree on the museums thing, w/o museums we would never see some incredible objects. In 50 to 100 years people would never see a 928 outside of pictures if not for museums. Great shot of the JPS Lotus, by coincidence I was watching it last night;

The Yamaha RZ500, behind the silver 356, is a true collector's item. Had one and sold it before they became really valuable. 500cc V4 2-stroke giant killer.

There is one other museum that 'exercises' cars. The Simeone museum in Philadelphia area (near airport) is exclusively racing cars. Every month they have at least two cars the put out into their large parking lot for some 'exercise' for all attendees that day to see. Cars to be run are announced in advance.
Not as much 'exercise' as I wish they would get, and I would like to see, but at least they are running and being driven (occasionally by the drivers who drove them when they were racing).

Its good that folks get to see them...i just find it sad, its far more exhilarating to see them in the wild.
Three years ago we were holidaying in the south of France and were passed on the road by a Zonda...its a much more buoyant memory for me than it would have been had i seen it parked at a museum or a car show.
Just Sayin...
Cheers,
