Default blaupunkt Toronto - thumbs down

A while back I posted about the blaupunkt Toronto as it was a good option for the 928 with its contemporary styling.

Well I'm now on my second unit and still not happy.

The first unit had a USB issue that caused a noticeable high pitch noise.

The second unit has is gone squirrelly.

And it is impossible to read the display during the day.

When I advance the track it just keeps going back and repeating the track.

To get into the playlists on my iPod I have to press the ID button that is to left of the list button.

Bottom line the sound quality is great, but the interface is super buggy and the screen is useless in the day.

I'm going to try and return it and select another, probably an Alpine.

Interesting... I'll admit I'm enjoying mine but I typically use BT to stream from Spotify. I don't use USB for anything other than charging, so I can't confirm nor deny similar behavior.

As for the display, here in über sunny Hawaii, it's just fine. Except from roughly 10AM to 2PM with my sunroof open... lol.

I should add that after initial install, I noticed my Toronto's display was much clear when I was standing at the rear of my 928- regardless of hatch open or closed. I didn't think it was bad from driver's seat, but the difference was enough that I lowered the back of the install sleeve enough (via brute force) that it may have made a difference.

You have me curious about experiences other folks may be having though...

PS: I think clicking on my username will take one to my Flickr account where I have a "...Radio & Related" album. There are only two pics of the Toronto there now, but I think I have more in Lightroom and will post Sunday after World Cup play... (for comparison).

I have one and I am very disappointed. The display is unreadable in bright sunlight and the interface for navigating through files and folders on an SD card or USB stick just plain sucks. I am either going to find a cheap MP3 player and use the auxiliary input or yank it out. I am not very critical when it comes to sound, so almost all head units sound fine to me, but the issues noted above really **** me off.

When you say you "lowered" the install sleeve, what did you do?

I took a very low tech approach... I parked in a sunny spot, took note of the glare on the head unit face, pulled the radio out and put my hand into the sleeve and pulled & pushed up. I also had my console side panels off so I put hand through the driver's side too while adjusting.

The thought was to get the 420's face more perpendicular to the floor (and ceiling) of the vehicle in order to reduce the amount of light that falls from the windshield onto a majority of the face) more like this "|" than like "\"... noting that a substantial amount of sun- which I have plenty of here in Hawaii!- was falling on the entire console (center console) face.

I'll admit, I rarely reference the face of my radio while driving. The most interaction I will have with the head unit while driving is to change volume or turn it on or off. Other than that, I tend to set things up before my commute. (Being a recovering paraplegic, I kinda have other things I need to think about while driving!) So at the start of my drive, everything is all connected via Bluetooth and I select a playlist off Spotify (which also has a few of my iTunes playlists) and off I go. I also have the mic (for phone calls) connected to the left side of the center console and have a USB port (for charging) connected on the passenger side of the window/wiper/sunroof switches so everything is fairly tidy. (Will post image within the hour.) Finally installed a mount for my phone, too. I'm always using Waze (for traffic alerts) and Speedometer (As my speedo is off).

Still, here are two pics comparing levels of glare. One is with the side windows up and the head unitreceiving most sunlight through my windshield (as the glare on the HVAC unit and CI panel shows). Sure, there's still some glare on the Blau, but not as bad as it was, I think.

The second image is with my passenger side window (which has Solar Gard 35) rolled down- which shows quite a bit of glare.

(And yes, I realize I still need to finish connecting one wire to my radio as it completely looses power when the vehicle is shut off. I'll get to it- and my clock- once my electricals are rock solid... or I have another hot date! ;-)
