Question: Volvo motor mount and engine install
I am installing the motor tomorrow. I have replaced the motor mounts with Volvo mounts and have them buttoned down to the subframe and made sure the hooks were attached to the lower metal piece below.
My question are as follows:
1) what would be the best way to ensure I can attach the 4 bolts on either side to the motor?
2) I was thinking of leaving the top motor mount bolt loose so I have more play and then tighten later... will I have access to this bolt later?
3) Any special step that will be needed to ensure I can get the bell housing attached again knowing that my motor is higher than it was before with the new mounts?
4) Should I bag my idea all together and attach the mounts to the motor and then lower the steering rack to attach the lower bolt once the motor is in place? If so, how does this process work and does it work well?
Any help is appreciated. I have looked all over and there are some ideas about what i mentioned above but I can't seem to find the solution to making sure I have some play in the setup during insertion but also be able to tighten down all bolts/nuts once in.
Thanks,
Bryan

remove the mounts from the cross member and install them into the brackets for the engine side,
then install these to the engine
NOTE tighten the top bolt of the mount prior to fitting,
make sure its centered.
NOTE use rubber bands to hold the lower finger plates to the mounts, drop the engine into the cross member.
NOTE leave the 4 MM bolts slightly loose so you have some play for the install.
NOTE you can leave the rack in position for now,
once the engine is in place then drop it down and install the lower mount nuts

Thanks for the help! Isn't there two possible holes that the engine mount could fall into on the cross member? If so, is there any visibility as to which one the engine is going into to make sure it is right? Or, is the other hole a locator hole for the bottom plate... I am not remembering whether or not this is the case.
Also, wouldn't it help to have the rack hanging down somewhat to ensure I am in the hole and can loosely put on the bottom bolt?
Lastly, any issues with this idea other than lining up with hole? I'm guessing I could use zip-ties as well and just cut them later once I've landed in the right spot. Don't think I have rubber bands long enough.

^^^ IIRC leaving the mounts on the engine will give you the most clearance for installing the engine since these mounts a re a bit bigger than the factory mounts you need the extra clearance .
For the OP the bolt will be very close to lining up to the correct holes once you mate the engine to the bell housing not much to worry about here and you can see the holes from under the car between the rack and cross member.
as an alternative use a thin piece of wire to secure the finger plate remove it once the lower mount is in the crossmember.
NOTE the fingers will need to be perfectly positioned and you may have to mod them just a bit to give finger clearance.
To get this clearance tighten all of the mount bolts then with a floor jack and a 1/2 inch extension and 17 MM socket place the socket on the bolt head closest to the finger plate, and the extension onto the jack,
With a few pumps of the jack this will lift the finger ever so slightly away from the hook you only need a few MMs as the fingers will increase clearance as the mounts wear in

she's in
Leaving the mounts on the motor helped out significantly and I just dropped the steering rack slightly.
I ended up using zip ties and putting a couple together to make them longer to hold the bottom plate on the mount. Once the holes were located I cut and pulled out the zip ties just before she found her resting spot.
Thanks for all the help. Hoping to possibly start the car today if I can get enough stuff done... tons of stuff to do yet.

Bravo! Great job, I like the paint treatment on the intake.
