Dad 928 been sitting outside worth fixing up...
My dad has a 928 Porsche that has been sitting outside for the past 10-15 years. For the last probably 5-8 years the drivers side door window has been down. The interior is horrible and totally needs to be redone. To my recollection the only problem it had when it did run was a bad fuel pump which is probably more issues now. If he gave me this car would it be worth putting money into or just find a decent few grand 928 and go from there? I would be doing most of the work myself, mechanical and interior.

Open to the elements for that long is not going to be good. As for advice, what year is the car?

Tough to answer without more pictures and info- it will surely be very expensive no matter what you do- but depending on which 928 you have, the mileage and purchase price- you never know

rowdog - The answer depends (almost) entirely on how much sentimental value the car holds for you and your family. A car left sitting for 10+ years will almost certainly cost more to fix up than it would be worth in the current market. That's especially true of a car that's been sitting outside with its window open. However, if it would mean a lot to you to drive your dad's car, only you can say what that might be worth.

Also depends on your determination, stamina, wallet, and ability to see things through. Mine sat outside with a busted windshield for 19 years. I'm fixing it, but it's going to be a long haul....if you got it in you......do it.

The 928 is the car that you restore for reasons that are not totally rational, but either out of nostalgia, affection, or the thrill of a challenge.
For many Porsche aficionados, it is something of an unloved black-sheep of the family. To those that have a passion for it, it is an understated, underrated, and slyly cool piece of supercar history.
If the car is in as bad a shape as it might be from your description, you could possibly purchase a lightly used Cayman or Boxster for the cost of getting the 928 back to it's former glory. So consider carefully what you are getting into.
And if it is too monumental of a task.. we will take all of those nice spare parts off of your hands.

I've owned my '87 S4 ever since it was brand new in the factory garage in Stutgart. I think I remember almost everything that ever happened to the car and most would say it is in pretty good shape; not a virgin like some of the cars of guys on this site have but "OK". Given all of that, I shudder at the thought of turning my vehicle into a true "virgin". It would take many bucks and you are probably looking at "many bucks" to the enth power.

I'm guessing there's no nostalgia attachment since neither of you took 5 minutes to place plastic over the window opening. Was it also neglected and abused up until it got parked? If so, sell it for parts.

It also depends on where the car sat, with the window down.
I'm guessing a window down in Germany is much different than a window down in Southern California.

How much money do you have? If you have the money and want to do it for the experience value go for it. You need alot of money. A lot.
