Just be gentle I suppose. No real trick. I've busted quite a few and since replacements are hard to find now, just be careful.

Okay. I will report what I find.
I am leaning toward the cluster being the issue as you mentioned earlier. That is where I found a couple loose connections that I repaired (volt meter) I'll check the other stuff first while the wheel is off!
Thank you gentlemen for your help!

after all these years there still more to learn.......thx Rob, off to read the service info CD

'92 GTS Service Manual
"Electronic Speedometer
The ABS pulses of the left-hand rear wheel are used as input for the odometer. Earlier 928 models used the pulses generated by the front wheels."

I too would look at the cluster Ole......seems logical.

I found an orange and brown wire not connected to the cluster. There are 3 empty spaces where it could go. I'll have to check Allan's wiring diagrams. I believe it is the correct colour for the speedo. I have a picture but can't upload from my phone. Will try later

Fixed. In the end it was the red and brown wire that had somehow popped out of its position on one of the 4 connectors to the cluster. Found a wiring diagram and was able to find the correct placement and now all works again!
