Bowden cable adjustment does nothing for your symptoms. Modulator adjustment may help some, but it's really just masking a symptom of a piston actuator problem. Do some searching here and find the instructions for the real solution after listing the symptoms.
And before you delve too deep into it, when was the trans last serviced, and how is the reservoir level right now? Checked hot, car suppored level, engine running, cycle the trans through all the gears, then into park for the level check. Just a few ounces low on fluid will sometimes cause the symptoms you describe. Once it starts slipping like that, you really want new fluid to go into it to replace the burned stuff.

Frequent candidates are K1 spring kit for 2-3 IIRC, and B2 servo update. THese can be issues but as indicated service history and wear and tear are considerations.

Before playing with anything suck a quart of fluid off and replace with of Trans x. More than likely you have varnish in the valve body due to age and sitting. That's what mine had and now it runs great!

Get it hot, check the fluid level. Correct as required. If this does not fix the problem, or if the fluid is dark or smells strange, service the transmission. When the filter gets changed, cut it open and look at what is trapped in the paper element. Report back.
