I don't want to post anything in this project that reflects negatively on Shawn because he is way above and beyond the call in his efforts to bring this design effort to completion. However, I do intend to cast question upon any of us who have put a greater burden on him in respect to the choice of watch for the individual conclusion. In particular, Shawn's response to a particular inquiry about the suitability of a particular watch seems to be limited to if the new 928 dial will fit and if the watch is a nice looking choice for the conversion. However, I think the details of this conversion in a particular watch needs to be fully evaluated by the individual in respect to the watch choice.

That's why I posted in the other thread about the rehaut ring or whatever it is covering up the chapter ring on the new dial. Now I see that there is a similar issue in respect to a recently suggested watch. In this new one there will end up being two chapter rings, the ring with the minute and hour hash marks on it.

Based on what Shawn posted from Duarte about one of these issues, I think the ring in question can actually be removed, but I too am not sure what will be left beneath it. Too, I think the ring in question in the latest inquiry can be removed also, but I don't know what will be revealed beneath it.

However, in my research I have found a site on the net that probably has the solution to both issues, and that is the replacement of the ring in question with one that is perhaps more suitable to the conversion in either case. If your google "chapter rings for seiko - dagaz watch ltd" you will find a catalog of various rings referred to as chapter rings, which some of them are, but anyl of which might well be installed in either of the above referred conversions.

So if you don't want the actual chapter ring imprinted on the new dial to be covered up, or if you don't want two of them, check this out and consider ordering the suitable ring for your conversion and having it sent to Shawn or Duarte.

Just so people understand, ANY available chapter ring is going go cover the minute marks and half of the hour marks on this watch face. if you get "diver's" watch that has a chapter ring (extra hashes or numbers around the dial) look to see how close that ring is to the day/date window. That will give you an idea of how much of the minute/hour marks will be covered by that ring. Some of the divers style cases look like the chapter ring is adding diameter to the watch face and would not cover the marks on the 928 face, some look like they would.

The rehaut is the area diameter wise between the edge of the face and the side of case, and vertically between the surface of the face and the bottom of the crystal. If a watch case is designed to have a chapter ring there is more vertical gap between the top of the face and the bottom of the crystal. This is what was described as rehaut showing without the chapter ring.

Any diagrams of this? I'm totally confused now.

First of all, the Stick is clearly incorrect in that only the "chapter rings" that are very wide and likely only the ones that have the 13 to 24 hour markings on them will obscure the minute and part of the hour hash parks on the face of the new dial. All of the other ones that are more narrow and that leave space between their inner edge and the day/date window will still reveal the chapter ring printed or painted on the face of the new 928 dial.

It looks to me like all of what they are calling chapter rings in the Dagnaz site I referred you to are likely to clear the markings on the 928 dial. The ring like that in the watch you are looking at and maybe have already ordered will clear the minute/hour markings on the new 928 dial, but then you are going to have two sets of such markings because there is such a set on the bevel ring outboard of that just under the outer edges of the crystal. What I am trying to suggest is that you buy one of the plain "chapter rings" from the site I mentioned and replace it in the watch so you have only the markings on the dial and only one set of them.

You need to look closely at the new 928 dial design and then closely at the face of the watch you have in mind, paying close attention to the spacing of the markings in both cases as they relate to the day/date window, and then make your own drawing in your head.

You're not the only one!

I like learning more about 928's but I don't need to be, or want to be, a watch expert.

I just want to order a watch, which I was just about to do, and not have to do a whole lot or research. I've picked a watch which I think is OK, but now I don't know, and I don't want to spend hours contemplating all these other considerations.

I thought this was easy .. sigh ...

This IS easy!

Just stick to the watches that Shawn originally put up on the site. (Plenty to choose from)

The questionable one's are only a few that some people have been seeking out on there own.

Easy peasy.

I think I understand. (Usually not a good sign).
I'm going with the plan that the watchmaker will make it look right, and if necessary bill me appropriately, and if not, I'll get the mods finished locally.
I suck at "envisioneering".

I don't want to sound like I'm copping out, but some of the questions are beyond my ability to answer. And, frankly, I'm mostly just screening for movement and crown placement.

I'll do my best, and Duarte is doing his best, but sometimes you just have to try it out. I've put together more than one watch that turned out not to look as good as I thought it would. But, again, the nice thing about the world of Seikos is that they're relatively cheap - and some of them are actually cheap. If you don't like what you created, it will cost less than a tank of gas to try again.

Thanks for the info RKD. As an example, what would the dial look like in this watch without any add/remove of chapter ring:

On the diver's watch 173 it looks like there is enough space between the day/date window and the inside edge of the chapter ring that the minute marks would show just fine. If the minute marks on the face show I would want to replace the chapter ring with a flat black one, AND I would replace the BEZEL, i.e., 10, 20, 30, ring with at Bezel with tach numbers like a stop watch...

This is a tach bezel from the daqez seiko parts site.

I realize this is beyond to scope of Shawn's arranged buy so I would order just the face and make my own arrangements to have a diver's watch customized with 928 face, hands, chapter ring AND bezel to change the Diver's watch to a Driver's watch.

In fact, I just ordered a face only to do just that, however, I'm sure I am going to be very happy with the military style black canvas band complete watch I ordered.

This is exactly what I mean: Sometimes it's an art, not a science. But, again, there's probably not a cheaper hobby that lets you create truly custom objects that you can use and enjoy on a daily basis.

One more of my customers, possibly two will be ordering one and I am going to get another face just to have.
