So both mounts are out currently?

Could the space between the mount and the diff be lessened by shifting the unit over towards the mount? I am not aware of any dimensional differences that would cause any issues on your year.
Good morning, Guy... Thanks!

Yes, both mounts are out (I'm pretty good at getting part OFF a car), lol.

I've tried the mount on both sides with the trans all the way up and in in between places. I started on the passenger side with the larger mount because I felt there would be no way to use the smaller of the 78 mounts on the passenger side. I could be wrong but there seemed to be a large space that would need to be filled where the top O the mount met the trans. I didn't like that idea. I have a photo that I don't know captures the issue. And yes some shims. Slightly different thickness on either side.

Anyways, I went from the smaller to the larger. Larger proved tough. I went to the driver's side... Removed both CVs (found some new work but no biggie) for more room and still, driver's was a challenge. I can get it into the basic area but can seem, for the life of me, to get the top hole with bolt to line up. Needless to say by this point I was hot and exhausted.

Important question tho,,, what year is your car??? And, I got the larger mount from Roger and am sure he would have warned me before purchase if I was headed in the stupid direction... Mine is an 86.

I am confused.

On both sides, in the general work area of the mounts, I also have these two tabs that are a part of the cross beam that kinda get in my way. They almost look like a part of casting. I was tempted to bend or cut, but paused and though better... I just don't see what purpose they are serving.

Thought after... The car is jacked up so that rear of the car is WAY higher than the front. Could the engine, TT and trans all shift/slide forward? Even an inch,,, a half an inch,,, would make a HUGE difference in the amount of space I am working with.

Another thing that seems to be limiting space are the WELLS for the rear seats - in the body design. Me,,, I can't see a big problem with knocking some very slight dents (they would result in a change that would be under the rear seat in the car) to give extra space??? Just a thought

Crazy maker when I have a running car before starting a job/work,,, and a non runner after I do work. Keeps me up at night!

Holes are not centered in old mounts which would be ok if the centering (which is accomplished by those guide forks) was undone by the then position of the mount top which meets the trans. Sorry if that's not clear.

This photo doesn't tell the story. I will do better. And, altho the old mount doesn't look bad,,, about45%of the poly on the mount has been pulled away from the aluminum.

I know the frustration. Without being there, it's difficult to envision the issue.

I will tell you that I did the job on my 83 and my 79. With the mounts off, I had a lot of movement of the transmission. I jacked it, lowered it , moved it side to side to get everything to line up. If memory serves, my car was supported by the trailing arm mount, not by the rear member so everything was suspended nice and low. Lots of movement. I also never used the thinner 512. I used 513 on both sides.

Hope I was some help

Hmm.

Thanks for the input, Guy... Much appreciated

For some reason I'm thinking that jacking her from the front, to get things to settle back rearward might do me some good. Then, jack and stand from the sides only to get under and position the mounts one side at a time. It seems (and I could be WAY wrong) that my limit in placing the mount is that, even if just a 1, 2, 3, 4 cm, the whole thing MIGHT have shifted forwards without the mounts on the trans....? I gotta figure it out. If it IS possible on the 86,,, I would like to have the larger mounts on both sides.

If I can place this damn mount I am thinking I am going to HAVE to use the older mount, original for the 86, on the passenger side for now... That is until I can figure out the larger 78 replacement.

Hi Jay. I see you already found GUY. I also had my car on a lift to let the rear suspension drop. I used the "513" mounts on both sides of trans..

What's up Hold...!

I've started another thread asking for advise on dropping the rear CM and suspension parts. NEVER did anything like it before or imagined I ever would...

Out of curiosity what year is yours?

I just have this lingering fear that I'm going to do a TON of stuff, get in there, to realize that the damn thing (513) isn't a fit.

Lol,,, maybe I'm just one of them ppl that need reassuring, haha
