Default Trans/Diff ID question

According to Robs VIN check thread, my car came with the G28 08 trans but I was just under the car and the diff is marked G28 05 11C 1288.

Anyone know what this means? Or am I confusing myself. TIA

Josh

Josh-

Is there still a production decal either on the rear deck over the gas tank, or a decal in the warranty booklet? (Not sure whether they did that in '83...)

Easiest explanation is that someone replaced the original G28.08 with a G28.05 at some point. Or maybe yours is an early '83 and they stuck a leftover G28.05 in it at the factory?

How many RPM do you turn at 75 mph in 5th gear?

Tech specs book on '80 to '84 trannies, with U.S. '83 highlighted:

Perhaps- Yours is the 304th U.S. '83 built out of 2084, and the 295th 5-speed out 934 U.S. 5-speeds.

Seems a little late in the model run to have a leftover G28.05 (?)

The trans code 11 C 1288 means it was the 1288th G28.05 built in 1982.

In 1982, there were 1954 '82 928's with an -05 transmission- 1059 U.S. cars and 895 ROW.

I don't know when each transmission was stamped with its serial # (at the time of assembly or at the time of mounting in the car) but if it's the former I wonder how a mid-production '82 gearbox ends up in a early-mid '83 car.

Then again, the transmission case in my '93 was cast in '89, so anything is possible.

Better gearing. I'd be happy.

Better gearing sounds good to me.

Suppose it might not be original to the car either.

I wish I could tell you what the rpms are on the hwy but I haven't driven the car a whole lot. Pretty much brought it home and tore it apart. I did drive it on the hwy but don't remember the rpms.

Are there any markings or external features on the diff cover that would indicate an LSD? Or is that only known upon opening up the diff.

Factory original LSD box would have G28/05 12 11C 1288 stamping.
