Default Hub Cover Removal

Guys,

I have Searched, but could not find.

Aside from obtaining the 9165 tool, has anyone concocted a device/method for pulling this cover off ? I was considering securing an exhaust clamp on the cover, and using my extractor claws to pull on it. I would place the slide hammer shaft through (instead of the extractor screw) and secure with a nut.

Anyone have any other tales to tell ? Also, is the 9165 device available ? Through the usual suspects, or is it a Porsche purchase ?

Thanks in Advance.

Craig

I used an exhaust clamp, and a claw hammer to lever off the lugs studs. It is a PITA, but worked OK. I think it was a 1-7/8' clamp.
Good luck,
Dave

I have not tried this myself, but I recall reading on RL someone tapping a 4 or 5mm hole in the center of the cap. Then using a longish bolt to screw in/push the cap off. I think they then capped the hole with a short bolt of the same diameter or some sort of plug. Perhaps, they will weigh in.

Thanks Dave.
I was thinking a placing one clamp in the cover's divot and placing a second clamp adjacent (and proximal to) the first one to give me more to 'grab'.
Good to know that it worked.
Thanks again,
Craig

Would the 'stabilizing' surface for the long bolt be the head of the spindle ? I could see that being problematic.

I use a short section of scrap hardwood flooring, and a hammer. Leaves no marks on the cap, vs the factory tool or the muffler-clamp methods.

I started on that, but was concerned the force I would have to apply would alter the stud axis.

Could be. I personally use equal parts of brute force and ignorance to get the cap off.

When tightening the wheel bearings I remove the caliper and disk and use good sized chisel and hammer to whack it from the back while spinning the hub carrier. Always works. No damage to the wheel bearing cover.

doc,
I'm not ready to pull the rotors yet. Just wanted to perform a quick inspection, and tightening if needed.

Works with the rotors in place.

I do the same quite often, but Mr. Spindle could get very angry.

How'd you manage that ? I tried something along that line and found I had no room to maneuver.

Ah, here's the thread on the hub cap mod. Not exactly as I described...
