Default MAF Compatibility - New MAF, Old Car

After doing some searching it seems that using an old style MAF in a new car works but does anyone know if it's possible to use a newer '87 MAF in an '85? I have access to a newer MAF to borrow for testing purposes only and was wondering if anyone has done this before (successfully)?
TIA.

They are all the same MAF's 84 to 86 16v and 85 to 95 32v.

I really only speak OB so forgive my ignorance but isn't the pot to tune the CO at the CE panel and not on the MAF of the later models, or am I mistaken?

The MAF's are all the same. The wiring to the MAF changed as the later models do not use the CO adjustment feature that is located inside the MAF. The #6 pin is no longer connected.
