Not much has changed...some misinformation about the 1980 USA being a valve bender interference engine. And the dyno numbers are a bit overstated. Fun read and MSDS is still making those headers !!

If anything I think the dyno numbers are a little low. My US 4.7 with stock Euro heads/cams and full exhaust did 272whp which comes out to about 320 crank. They made 292 crank out of a 4.5L with better heads and Euro intake and throttle. Clayton dynos do suck though, so that number doesn't surprise me. I certainly don't miss working on those dinosaurs.

Cool

My 1983 S is now licensed as an antique so I don't have to ever take it back for emissions testing !! Hmmm, dreaming of tossing the cat, installing headers, advancing the timing, and looking for euro heads and cams ? :-)

Regards,

P

The headers are a big improvement....and the euro heads, cams, and INTAKE runners are all bigger.

I just got the throttle body from an S2 to stick on my 81 along with the S2 intake. All I can say is that the stock throttle body can fit inside of the euro one and the legs are bigger. It's insane how choked down these engines are.

Euro heads are easy to get, the real hard thing to get are the cams. They are nearly impossible to get a set of here and even in Europe.
The 78-79 cams are close enough and can give L-jet engines a huge boost in power and torque.

This shows that these old engines can still make good power when tuned right and that Greg has been in the 928 game a very long time. Almost as long as my mechanic

Helps to remember that was during the time of the 55 MPH speed limit and my 1980 has an 85 MPH speedo !! The ONLY thing Porsche was trying to do was meet U S EMISSION rules and still be allowed to sell cars So yes they really choked down these engines...

James, my 81 also had a 85 MPH speedo and one of the first things I did was change it out for a 170MPH one.

I actually wanted to see how fast I am going , something the government didn't want us to know at the time I guess.OR maybe they thought the speedo limited the top speed to 85

Hey you're welcome, as with most articles there will be some things that may be wrong or people will take exception to, but still an interesting read you probably won't find anywhere else.
