Thought I'd throw this out there in case anyone runs into the same problem. My odometer after only 27,000 miles started flaking out. before my car went away for paint last year I took it apart assuming the gear was shot. It didn't look great but was in one piece. I replaced it- no go. I took it apart again and tried the washer trick- nothing. I ended up doing this four times with no results, and the car went away for paint. Finally got it back a few weeks ago, and sent it down to Cory at specialty gauges in VA. Had it back in a week and he said it was the odo step motor. Works perfect now. For anyone who replaces the gear and checks connections, mating surfaces with no good results, worth a look.
