Do you have rear air? I have a kicker amp that fits well in the rear storage. Easy to access that way as well to tune.

I took out my rear AC and used the vacated space for Amps.

I thought about this spot before...How large of an amp were you able to mount in there?

Thanks for all the ideas. The compact amp in the stock position is very appealing - I didn't know that there were any with decent power that would fit there - I'll look into that more.

I believe some people are using the Picasso Nano amplifier. It is small enough to fit in the stock location: http://soundstream.com/store/car-aud...sso-nano.html/

Cheers!

Thanks - another compact option (a lot cheaper on Amazon). Any experience of audio quality between the RF PBR300X2 (class BR) and Soundstream Pn4.520d (class D)?

It's never quite that simple though . I currently have the crossovers for the component speakers (two in each door, plus the 6" in the rear panel). These are about 7"x4"x1.5" (x2). Where might they fit?

In the door would make the most sense for passive crossovers I think... Quite a bit of room behind the trim & outside the door cavity, you need to wire back to the 6.5" units but in terms of # wires I think it's a wash. Would be better to have an active crossover splitting to different amp channels for the 6.5" though I would think.

Rennlist examples - (not mine) but mine are located here too.

It's good to know that the DynAudio crossovers will fit in the doors - I'd assumed that they would. Now I need to see how much of a pain it is to get the panels off. I was planning to use a different amp for the DynAudio 6.5" rears, as I want to adjust the level there independently from the fronts. That would mean not driving them via their crossovers though.

Currently, the two smaller speakers on the rear panels are not wired. I have space for two of the compact amplifiers, so I was wondering if I shouldn't put both a 2 and 4 channel amp in:

4 channel:
- 2 channels for the door speakers (via their crossovers) (front phonos)
- 2 channels for the (original) smaller speakers in the rear panels (rear phonos)
2 channel:
- Rear panel 6" speakers (rear phonos)

That way, I'd have higher power for the larger speakers and the ability to adjust the front / rear balance, which I miss. I have a small (powered) sub coming to go inside the spare wheel, for a little low-frequency in-fill.

Is it only the original 6.5" speakers that are 2 Ohm? If not, I might need to put the original speakers (the 2 in the rear panel) on the 2 channel amp. That will be longer-term, as they will probably need refoaming.

Yes, I have rear air. That's a good option for those without it.

You don't have to give up the spare to use the spare tire well for an amp as long as you don't require a larger powerful amp. I have an older Orion Cobalt 304 4 channel amp sitting in the spare tire and it fits perfectly. It's held snug by the wheel itself and I still have room for some extra belts. This location is great for running power from the battery and it's easy to lift it out and set it aside if I need to get to the battery. I've never had any heat buildup problems either.

I use 2 channels to power the 4 front and rear speakers, and the other two channels bridged to power the sub which is in a separate box. You lose the ability to fade F/R doing this, but that hasn't been an issue and the sound is awesome!

I'm planning to repeat this setup in my 87 since it works so well.

I got an amp (Blaupunkt) that just fit on the passenger's parcel shelf:

But I didn't want it exposed, i wanted it to look "normal", like this:

Which I achieved with a small piece of masonite and some trash:

et voila!

The stock speakers horizontal on top of the rear quarterpanels are particularly crappy ones - you need replacements - or just don't use them. Challenge is that that location has very shallow mounting depth.

Three of these Three of these
along with one MBQuart passive crossover. Two for speakers at 2 x 75W@0.05%THD and one for a 10" sub at 190W. Max power is 2x150 (x2) and 1x400. So, a thousand watts. I also mounted four small ultra-quiet fans to draw air out of the rear A/C console.

If I was doing this project again today (as opposed to buying the amps and letting them sit for three years due to life) I would probably do it differently. The Picasso Nano amps look interesting. I remember running across those when I got back to my project and deciding to use what I already had acquired. I would, though, download the full manual and make sure that the power spec is at a very low THD. I've found that some manufacturers play games with the power spec vs. THD.
