A nice blend between the classic 928 design and the current model lineup, Porsche needs to hire this guy asap!

Before people get their hopes up, this guy doesn't even work for Porsche. He drew this up as part of an application portfolio.
I'm still baffled why any 928 fan would want a "new" 928. It will just muddy up the image of our cars.
The 928 was the first "clean sheet" design in Porsche history (not counting race cars). It broke industry standards and introduced a lot of new technologies.
Any "new" 928 will be a shared platform, most likely with an Audi. I'm sorry, but that is NOT what a "928" should be.
As far as I'm concerned, the modern 928 is the 911. Porsche spent the 90's planning the transformation from a sports car to a GT for their *** dragging icon. They succeeded and the Boxster took the place as the companies "sports car".
If Porsche ever does release a two door GT, that will really be confusing since they will essentially have to cars in the same market segment. I'm sure the bean counters are studying this very closely, to determine if a front engine V12 / V8 GT will take away sales from Ferrari, Jaguar, Aston Martin and Mercedes without taking any away from the 911, or at least minimal sales.
In a perfect world (or the random thoughts of my head) they would release a front engine GT and put the 911 on a diet. Get that plumb chassis to under 3,000lbs and shrink the dimensions to something that is more associated with a real, pure sports car.

Looks neat, maybe with a different wheel it'd look better to me.
Went with my local PCA on a drive n dine at the 1st of the year to a racing shop in Ormond Beach, just north of Daytona that specializes in Caymans, BGB Motorsports Group, http://teambgb.com/main.asp. They have been competitive in both the Rolex & Continental GrandAm racing series in recent yrs.
Their engine builder gave a good presentation of the upgrades they do for race cars etc. He said a few things unsolicited that perked up my ears. One, he said he worked for a dealer for over 15 yrs & his "job interview" consisted of them taking him to a room that had a disassembled engine in it. They told him it was a 928 & he had a set amount of time to put it together(think he said it took him 2 days). They told him if he could put it together correctly, he could work on any Porsche he would face. He said he gained a great respect & affection for the 928 after that(they did hire him).
Later, while talking about what is going on with Porsche & the current & near future, he mentioned that he still knew people at the factory. He said that he'd recently seen pictures of a new two door coupe that Porsche was working on that would be out in 18-24 months. He said it was very radical, like nothing you'd seen from Porsche yet. He seemed excited while talking about it. Then, almost as a side note, he said, "its going to be a new 928". Out of the 50 or so people there, several immediately made comments about how I would be very interested in hearing more about it. Anyways, just a random story, from an engine builder at a Cayman race shop, who used to work for a P-dealer for a long time.
I was going to mention this the other month, but usually these threads get way too much into a fire fight before they die out.
Flame suit on!

Porsche, builds to many versions of the 911, just my opinion. Maybe if they trimmed down the 911 line, and ditched the SUV's there would be room for a real GT again.
I think Hacker is right, at least for the present.
If Porsche ever produced a successor to our cars, it would have to be as radical the original. Maybe then it would bring people to appreciate the 928, and our cars would become as collectable as the 911. Ether way, I'm happy with what I've got. Prolly be way out of my price range anyway.

New design study on 928
Just read this on Car Buzz. I thought it was a great homage to the 928.

I think it's an interesting concept.
My reaction is the rear looks a little too 911-ish with the very squat look and improbably-wide fenders. Second thought is, the headlights are rather conventional ... from the front it could be almost anything. The 928's crazy-different headlights aimed up at the sky were one of it's most striking design innovations ... what would be today's equivalent ?
Finally, could (or would) Porsche really muster up a 'clean-sheet of paper' development effort again? Would be awfully tempting to just dress up a warmed-over two-door Panamera and call it the "new 928". With the original 928 the company was reaching to create something entirely new, to be better at more things than any other car.
