Default Noisy blower

Like practically everyone else who owns a used 928 (they don't come any other way) my heater blower is noisy (yet it does produce adequate air flow).

I've been amazed to find that there are a number of comments about replacing the blower with others that are quiet and have greater air flow but I have not seen anything about fixing the original unit.

I would expect that the problem with these units is excessive axial (or radial) play and there should be a way to correct the problem without having to buy a new unit. Seems to me even a liberal application of grease or a Teflon washer of some sort should banish the problem for a very long time.

So, has anyone come across a "fix" for this problem without having to spend $300 - $600 for a new unit? Sure would be nice if Dwayne had a multi-photo depiction of how to fix a noisy blower (hint, hint).

As a stop gap measure until your blower actually dies, you can drill a small hole on top of the motor housing roughly where the bearing is located. Squirt your favorite multi purpose lube into the hole and seal it up. That should quiet it down until the next time.

Mine did the same thing until it recently failed. The PO replaced the original motor with a used unit, but it only lasted about 3000 miles. I have Roger's retrofit unit sitting on my bench to be installed tomorrow. This Bosch motor, new wiring harness and complete instructions are top notch and definitely worth the $285.

You could always try to have the blower motor rebuilt at a local electric shop. That is what I did with the sunroof motor. Now it is good as new, but took 3 weeks to get the motor back from a very busy shop. If your motor needs new windings, brushes, etc, etc, you are looking at least half the cost of a new Roger set up and you still have an old blower motor that isn't near as powerful as the new Bosch unit.

It is a pay now or pay later kind of thing and I need A/C real soon in Houston!

Come to Wyoming - no AC needed at 8300 - 12004 feet. Just need the blower in spring and fall for heat. Car gets put away in the winter.

EXACTLY the same experience- I got about 2 years out of a used unit, which isn't bad, but what a PITA to deal with it again.

Winter and early spring is the only time you can drive with the windows open and no AC in Houston. A heater is something I could do without except on the rare chilly day, but I never have to put her away for the winter.

The blower motor from a '92 VW Passat is an exact fit, you have to use the 928 squirrel cage, and splice the wires, as the plug in is different. Ask me how I know.

Which jet? I was project engineer on 747 engines. Summer is for driving my S4; winter is for skiing.

thats what I used to replace mine. I removed the OE blower, and discoverd the top bearing was trashed, I happened to have a blower assembly from a VW parts car still. I dismantled the Passat blower and removed the motor, compared the VW motor to the 928 motor, and they are Identical in design and size, except for the polarity is reversed, but it's a DC motor, so I swapped cages and all is well.
