Default '87 S4 Speedo/odo fixed!

For the first time, I can actually tell how fast I'm going and how many miles I've gone. When I acquired the car last summer, the odometer read 204K but both it and the speedometer were completely inop.

After getting a costly speeding ticket last month, I finally took my dash pod and instrument cluster out (for the second time) and sent my speedometer to Rick Borth at Overseas Speedometer in Austin, TX. I've used him for almost 15 years for Saab (VDO) speedometer rebuilds, and he did a nice job on my 928 speedo with quick turnaround.

I recently picked up an '87 S4 myself. During the test drive, I didnt pay attention but after I got her home, I realized the ODO and TRIP do not work. My speedo works, my tach works but no ODO. Is this something your guy could do or should I just tear into it? I have seen MULTIPLE ads for cars for sale and alot of them make mention of the ODO not working, I suppose this is a pretty common problem with these cars. Comments?

It is more than likely "That Gear." Roger has them for a reasonable price. Dwayne's writeup covers it very well.
There are a few different gears, the tooth count depends on miles vs kilometers. It's easiest to pull the old gear out and get a tooth count (put all the pieces together, use a magnifying glass).

Thanks! I will search for the thread on here. Mine is miles not km, so hopefully it should go a bit smoother.

Not on here. Dwayne's Garage.

And it doesn't matter which your car is for the repair, it just matters for selecting the correct gear.
Call Roger and talk to him. He knows his 928s well enough that he will make sure you get the right one. He will also send you a couple different ones, you pick out the correct one and return the others.

When I removed my speedo head to send out, "that gear" literally disintegrated into several pieces of mushy brown plastic. I knew that was the reason the odometer couldn't work, but mine also had no speedo operation so I sent it to Rick. He had to replace several other specific items to get the speedo to work (and of course the odo gear was replaced). His service is a good option for people who are comfortable with taking their instrument cluster out but don't want to get into the actual speedometer/odometer assembly. It was about $188 with shipping.
