LH-brain compatibility
Unfortunately my car is still not running yet since my LH-brain broke and I lost it at a "shady" rebuilder.
BUT I was offered a brain by a fellow Rennlister, which sounds like a good deal ($400 for a '90 used brain).
The serial number ends with 14 (Green tag). Can someone verify if that is compatible for my '87?
Thanks,
Sab.

Hi Sab,
I could have repaired it for you, but you got a good price if it's a good one !
The Porsche 928.618.123.14 is meant for 1989-90 GT manual.
The correct brain for your '87 is /10 (no diagnostics)
With the GT brain, the idle speed will be set higher, and it is optimised for GT cams, which are different to your S4.
It will probably run "OK-ish", a change of EPROM would convert it into a /10 .
They are plug in, and I could supply you with the right EPROM if you are interested ?

Hi John,
intersting, I wish you would have spoken up earlier you could have saved me a lot of trouble and money.
I still have two other LH units that I have bought since mine broke which need rebuilding, so I would like to get a quote from you for a rebuild and a price for the eprom chip.
Since you seem very knowledgeable in regards to these units, please tell me:
What are the risks of a good working brain going bad at install or right after? Assuming the brain is installed properly with the battery disconnected.

John, I have an unusual set-up in my 89 S4, I have a 5.4L (~) motor with GT cams and an automatic trans. I have not personally check my chips yet, but assume they are the stock S4 chips (the PPI showed tampered boxes, but stock chips installed).
I'm just wandering if I would see any benefits or problems from a set of stock GT chips?

Hi Sab,
I did contribute to the thread where we heard the sad story of the "crossroads town" repairer. I said then that I was working on a "tile" replacement - I couldn't offer you anything at that time.
Things have advanced since then !
As regards the possiblity of a unit failing, when care is taken with the battery - they have been reported failing sometimes when subjected to severe mechanical shock. One guy in the UK went over a large pothole, and the car stopped instantly.
If you take care of it electrically, you may be OK for years, the purely mechanical failure seem to be quite rare.
I'll send you a PM about costs - I will asume that you want the two untis repaired ? I would be interested in buying/trading a unit from you.
Regards

Hi T-MaX,
That must be some car ! I can't say from experience which EPROM would suit best. You also need to consider both LH and EZK EPROMS.........
I have GT EPROMS for both units that I could "clone " for you. You could try them on a "sale or return" basis ?
As yet I don't have a copy of the '89 S4 EPROM files to help you confirm that you do have standard chips in there. They have a number on their label that defines the code type. They cahnged from '88 to '89 to '90 for the S4 auto, for various reasons.
