@crushingday

I've had the same experience but he did send me service receipts and the carfax. I'm close enough to buy the ppi and look at it in person before I jump.
Are you still in the market? What have you found?

In Craigspeak (the language of craigslist) selling it for a boss, friend, aunt or uncle USUALLY means you are dealing with a flipper (an unlicensed unregulated dealer) who has a signed open title which to evade registration fees and taxes as well as not reporting taxable income never transfers title into their name.
These "professionals" will buy cars with problems from honest individual sellers detail them to the nth degree even buying illegal smog certificates where needed and quickly resell them.....with little or no recourse since they officially never owned the car. Any title issues which might pop up and the buyer is left trying to locate the prior owner who was last listed on the title....where ever they might be..
Also with the surge of Car title loans it has become necessary to check that there are no liens against the car as some owners have gotten duplicate titles so they can borrow against their car and then have a clear title with which to sell it after they have borrowed against it. The new buyer gets screwed...
None of this may apply to this S-4 !! Did note that Consumer Reports in their opinion believes that a salvage title history means a 50% discount from Kelly Blue Book. Not that I find C R to be all that reliable

Hobibill, Although the seller seemed believable, I never did get copys of the receipts. I also asked him if I could speak to the owner and never heard anything. I told him I was ready to fly down and see the car if he can get me the things I requested, but I really wanted to talk to the owner. He has not seemed as proactive as I would have liked and this has made me a a bit weary. I really have no other pertinent info on the car. I know I had spoken to him even before the Great White 928 site was even in existence. Not sure if I will pursue the car of not. Let me know if you do get the car. Maybe it would be a good one, I just don't know. I do think the asking price is too high.

There are a few red flags here, on a car that is already known to have had a salvage title. For me, it wouldn't be worth the potential hassle, especially when that asking price is so unrealistic. There are better cars out there.

Hold out for a good one.. really nice examples come up often enough - just be patient for a bit, I agree this one doesn't look loved at all under the hood...

I just recently purchased an '87 S4, red, etc., etc. myself. I verified a few questions I had about the car with a member or two on here that actually new of the car and/or the PO. I still dug as deep as I could, being 5 hours away from its location. I reviewed the carfax, poured over available pics of the car, spoke to the PO who filled in lots of gaps, called the local Porsche dealership to see what they knew about the car and spoke to a couple of local Euro shops to see if they had ever worked on it. I would try to get solid answers to your doubts before moving forward. While there is alot to be learned from a PPI(a MUST), I would dig deeper and continue to ask TONS of questions of the members on this site and of other knowledgable folks before I would take the next step with this one. The title issue is a HUGE red flag.
