Default Anyone have a roof/bike rack for sale?

Hello:

As we used to say in the Marines, I'd like to "acquire" one of these units:

Please let me know if you do!

Cheers from cold, Upper Michigan.

They are quite rare, never popular. The front two feet are rubber suction cups on the PAINT with hold down straps to the roof channel..... The rear bolts to the same 4 holes used for the ski mounts at the side of the rear hatch near the roof.

They aren't really suction cups, but they do rest on the paint. I make sure to have a really thick wax job before bolting mine on. I use it for the topbox, as seen at SITM a couple years back. It was great to put lawn chairs in, and we still cruised at 80+ without a problem.

No it isn't for sale. I've seen two for sale in 10 years, and I bought one of them!! Good luck!

A 928 in the UP? You sir, are a brave soul…

I blast across from Harbor Springs to Bessemer on Hwy 28 on occasion during the summer. Would love to have a 928 contact along the way. Plus, if you ever get into my neck of the woods, I've got tools and a knack for figuring out some of the obscure quirks in these beasts…

Roof rack? Would love to find one…

I do have the factory ski rack for a 911 though. And, no, ;-) it's not for sale…

Should be up there in Mid June the way things are going, so much frigging snow! I'm in no rush to head north...

Thule used to make a rack that mounts in the front and back on pads. Similar to the front of the factory system. I used it for windsurfing and my favorite use: transporting a 16 foot canoe. I really liked it and the pads never really harmed the paint.

I'll try and research the bike shops here for a possible fit for one. We'd like to have one for our mountain bikes. We got 12" of fresh spring yesterday ugh... But it should start melting today. 40s and 50s all week. The end is near!

Let me know when you're coming up through Marquette and we can connect.

Many years ago, prior to owning the 928, I was digging through some ski racks at a sale and bought a pair designed for the 928. They attached at the driver's side of the hatch at the factory location, but a set of similar holes and inserts was supposed to be added at the bottom end, where there aren't any now. Skis sat off to the left so the hatch could be opened. I held them up against my car, but the S4 wing is in the way of where the skis would live on these racks. They did work very well on my hotrod Saab 900 Turbo though.

Fast-forward to today. The upper hatch area crossbar fitment is a snap with the factory screws and inserts already in place. I'm not at all a fan of having pads sitting on the paint. Plus the raingutter pieces on the sides of the roof aren't strong enough to hold anything. Anybody looking at a better way to hold a front crossbar?

The pad and gutter system works fine. You don't need to pull against the gutters very hard to locate the rack. I used it countless times taking it on and off after each use and never had a problem. I would think that the leverage a 16 foot canoe would place against the system in a crosswind would quickly identify any problems and there were none. I routinely drove at 75 without incident.

I have the ski/surf rack NOS in the box and never used. I'd part with it for $900. The last NOS ones sold about a year ago, I think for $500. Send PM if interested.

Just an aside on the same subject. I purchased my '87 S4 at the Porsche factory while we were celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary. Had a ski rack mounted and drove down to Austria to go skiing. A week later we drove back to Stutgart while hitting 130 mph. Skis and rack held up just fine.
