Default Door sound deadener/isolator recommendations

Hi

Got my passenger door hinge stop out (what a PITA), and got the inside door panel off. Found an extra electrical line not found in the illustrations on rennlist. I will try to post photos. Now that I've got this torn apart I would like recommendations for sound proofing/deadening the door. I'm not interested in the Home Depot roofing material that smells like asphalt. Who has experience with Dynamat/Fatmat/second skin etc and which is best???? This door project will last a week or two, since all the plastic white pieces broke upon removal (typical 25 year old plastic) and have to be replaced…look for an order soon 928sRUS.

Let me know your experiences….

Thanks
Brian

Hushmat by far. IMO better than Dynamat and about the same price if not cheaper. It's on my 928 on the firewall (but probably do more when i get it in a driveable state, and money), and my daily driver 07 Nissan Versa on the rear floor pan, strut towers, and hatch area. Easy to apply.

Don't use any asphalt based junk, it hardens up in short time and does nothing for sound insulation... get what you pay for.

I've used Dynamat and Fatmat and can't tell a difference between the two. Doing the entire door does make a noticeable difference so use whatever you have or the cheapest of the three. No experience with second skin.

I have used fat mat and if you locate it vertically in places that get hot it leaks bitumen unless you do a fabulous job of sealing the edges. Second Skin doesn't do this - so I prefer it for doors - Fat Mat seems fine on flat surfaces.

Did both doors with Second Skin damplifier see previous thread on this.

i just installed dynamat when I put new speakers in front and rear and did DYNAMAT on the doors and I can really tell the difference, most of my drone from the 3 inch dual exhaust is GONE and I mean Gone!!!!

IT is really unbelievable…will be doing db check next day off and see if any measurable improvement…i.e. before and after and I was ready to jump for a new exhaust, hahahahaha!!!!

I used the revised version of Brownbread called B-Quiet Ultimate. It has been discussed a lot in other forums. It is inexpensive and works very well.

Basically if you get any butyl based insulation you should be fine. Avoid asphalt insulation at all costs. It STINKS and doesn't work as well, also gets very sticky when warm.

Fatmat's step up product Megamat is great! Its a Butyl based product, which IMO is the only way to go with any brand product you go with.

Butyl also has no smell, a definite plus.

As Alan stated above Fatmat's regular product will sag if is placed vertically and the temp gets high enough, however this is not an issue with there Megamat.

Yes quite noticeably better but I still have more to go in on the floor/firewall, and rear seat area. I will continue to use a mix - because I have quite a bit of Fat Mat left over (got a great deal on some). But I much prefer the Second Skin damplifier to install on complex curves - it has a little bit of stretch which makes it go better - plus if you have to punch out small holes - thats easier to do.

Ships from Tucson, AZ

I have some more of their other stuff too.

I just received my shipment of Second Skin Luxury Liner Pro. Once I receive my parts from Roger at 928sRUS I will begin the reassembly.

Anybody have recommendations on what to clean the old glue off and prep the painted metal door surfaces with to make the best adhesion of the MLV?

Err - I think you may have screwed up...

Where are you planning on putting this? inside the door on the inside of the outer skin? OR on the outer skin of the inside door panel underneath the inner door trim panel? - as in the thread I posted? (it seems far too thick for that to me...).

As I understood it luxury liner is not self-adhesive - so you need to either lay it on top of something horizontal (like the floor - likely its primary use) or glue it well on to something vertical...

I think the intended appllication would also be on top of a foil backed vibration self adhesive dampener like damplifier/pro...

What do you have in mind?

Crap! I blew it. I ordered the wrong stuff. OK, sending back the other stuff.

Alan, Did you use Damplifier or Damplifier Pro? Looks like they are 1 mm thick, or 2 mm thick respectively.

Pays to ask BEFORE ordering....
