Wrenching at home...
...saves a lot of money
...provides a lot of insight and satisfaction
...allows for a lot of cleaning
...provides certainty that things are done well (within one's own limit)
...makes one's car truly his own
but...
...requires time to research parts, write ups and do's/don'ts
...requires waiting time for parts
...requires time for wrenching
...requires the weirdest body movements
...leaves one with scraped knuckles
...leaves you with tons of oil, coolant and old parts not simply put in the trash due to environment regulations
I'm starting to wonder what is smarter.

In the case with the 928, wrenching not only saves you a lot of money but allows you to buy more parts to fix more stuff to save more money to buy more parts to fix more stuff to save more money to buy more parts to fix more stuff to...
You see where this is going but we still love doing it anyways.
I like that shot of the Ferrari and Porsche. Ferrari is like (=_=) while the Porsche is

If you factor in the income taxes you have to pay on what you make and what is left to pay the mechanic suddenly his hourly rate may seem like nearly DOUBLE
So if YOU ARE not making hourly twice what the mechanic charges .......it just may be a good use of your spare time. But if it takes you 10x longer to do
Pretty much boils down to being a HOBBY and they all cost money.....Boats ,airplanes, golf, fishing...or racing cars !

Just this week I re-soldered the circuit board under the front seat that fixed the sometimes working and sometimes not seat/mirror adjustments and replaced the relay in the HVAC control head with the radio shack relay. 3$ or 4$ in parts and about 3 or 4 hours of my time.
Based on the 1975$ I just paid to have my Cayman serviced with a plug change and a couple other items I think this one paid off!

Lets not forget trusting your baby to another, personally I can't let anyone touch my 928. Maybe for an alignment, but that's it.
And the buy more parts with what you save also does it for me. I would never be able to do as much as I have done this winter if I was paying someone to do it.

I do all of my own work on all of my cars. Wouldn't have it any other way. This way I know the job is done properly.

I do almost all of the work to my car. The only other person I let touch my car, aside from getting an alignment, is a factory trained 928 mechanic .

Don't forget, for some, like myself, the 928 came about when everything else seemed to be crashing down all around...I have said before, that it seems more like she has saved me, vs. the other way around......in other words, I find it therapeutic. Wrench on!

Ron,
I like your idea. I am in a similar situation. I got my car right after both of my parents passed (both in 2 years). It was one of those life altering events. It has been there through several other major life events recently. I always am thinking " cant wait to dig into X project when this is over"... that has applied to whatever was going on at the time..
I enjoy tinkering, so it is a get away from the daily grind for me.

Three Wheelin'
Wrenching
I wrenched so much at home I did this... helps me tremendously. I have been using jack stands for too long so I figured I needed an upgrade.
