taking apart s4 engine
Hello, I am trying to take apart a 928 S4 engine. So far I have the engine on an engine stand (cylinder heads are already off). I turned the engine upside down and removed the oil pan. I have the workshop manual but it only shows a picture of the engine and not really how to take it apart. Do you guys no what bolts to take off first? Do I try and split the engine in half then remove pistons, rods and crank? thanks

Remove rod end nuts to remove rod and piston together. Use a hammer handle to tap the piston out of its bore. Split the the block to remove the crank.

I thought the engine splits in half by removing some of the bolts. From the image below I just have to unbolt the rod ends from the crankshaft and slide the pistons and rods out of the bottom? thanks

the lower cradle has the crank bearing journal caps as a part of the casting...so yes you spilt the block by removing the whole cradle. Then you can lift out the crank.

thanks for replaying. I circled what I believe are the first set of bolts that need to be taken off in yellow. The purple circles are the bolts to split the engine in half, can someone please confirm this. Also the gear circle is a engine wear and a seem. Can someone please let me know if this is normal or if the block is bad? thanks

if you have not already procured a WSM it would be very wise for you to have one before you go any further

read up on crankshaft end play....and thrust bearing failure.. it is quite possible that that engine is NOT rebuildable....
ALSO note you MUST NOT hone the cylinders with a bottle brush hone.....it is not like a Chevy !!!
