Pan gasket

Pan gasket
This is the year that I will replace my 34 year old pan gasket. The reality is there are two ways to go with this job, 1) from the bottom by removing the front crossmember and suspension, 2) removing the engine and doing all the work with the engne on a stand. I am leaning to pulling the engine, it would be easier to work on the engine on a stand and I could do a complete reseal on the motor. It also would let me do an engine compartment clean up. My only concern is the down time that an engine pull and the extra engine work would take out of the very short Vermont driving season. Any suggestions or reccomendations would be appreciated.

Considering gaskets haven't been replaced before, you'll find it won't be much more time to get the motor out and work on it with easy access, and attend to all the other things that need doing without doing contortions.
It took me around 8 hrs to get my 82 motor out and stripped, ready for cleaning, without any help.
Save you back and sanity and pull the motor out.

Pull baby, pull. I have done this job solo many times. I takes a little bit of time but will save you so much more. On a later car I might not be so sure as there is much more to disconnect and is not really a solo job as someone has to feed the harness out as the engine goes up. You will need a pretty deep cherry picker to reach all the way in with the front bumper on.

After doing my intake, fuel lines, water pump, tensioner, cam cover gaskets. And now the pan gasket and mounts, just pulled the pan tonight.
Next time I will pull the motor.

Pull the motor. Change all the rubber bits, hoses, sensors, gaskets, maybe even head gaskets.
Took me 8 hours to pull and reinstall the motor by myself. I only know this because after I got done putting the motor back in I had an oil leak that I had to pull the engine to fix. Pulled engine, spent 5 min fixing leak and put back in. Worst part is feeding the damn wiring harness through the firewall. If you have a helper you can shave 30 minutes off the total out/in job. I want to kill the guy that designed that harness/hole combination.

Thanks, for all your thoughts. I think pulling the engine is the way to go. I will need to put together an expanded parts list, and will include a TB/WP as a part of the work. looks like my parts expense just went up.
Thanks
