Looks like we have a list spammer. I reported them. Hopefully we'll see their accounts revoked and posts removed.

Perhaps we should break out in sing. I know how about - Spam-a-lot! :-D

Anyway so close and yet so far. We are within 1 hour of starting her and we get hit with an electrical snag. Finally fixed it, sorry of. Now electrics are working but windshield wipers won't shut off.

Bleed the 996 monoblocs and they are ready to do their job. New wheels and sneakers look good. Unfortunately I am off to Las Vegas for 9 days soon so not much all be reported after Dec 5th thru 14th.

Dogleg,

Thanks for the encouragement to carry on. I would place this early RoW 928 in the class of a production prototype whose designers tried to make as much bleeding edge tech it could.

It is an amazing car in many ways; body design; suspension; attention to find detail; hippy aesthetics in keeping with the age; making a visual statement thru the exterior, interior and under the hood; pride of workmanship; independent thinking.

I am a longtime mech-head. My dad was an auto mechanic and then mechanical engineer before he passed at age 46. He had me in the garage at age 3 leading to a lifelong affair with cars, motorcycles and a litany of other objects d'mechanical. I am a software engineer by trade and this car has many times caused me to shake my head asking "what were they thinking?"

Perhaps I should have started with a better candidate, but who would have saved poor Inga from her fate. There she sat, tattered with age, a bad lung, rickety in the joints, a few PO sins but ready to pounce with all her might.

Since my first glimpse of a 928 around 1982 I knew that one day I would own one. It took me 30 years to finally acquire one. I had to ignore the warnings from several POs and a good German friend and fantastic Mercedes and Porsche mechanic citing the high cost of keeping these finicky old race horses running on the track.

Inga stands so close to life I can smell the partially unburned fuel as she idles. My hope is that nothing goes bad at ignition. I have R&R'd many engines, but the Porsche 928 is a new adventure. First run always represents a bit of trepidation as one cylinder after another fires up for the first time. It looks like I'll be waiting another 20 days to feel that terrible thrill as I head to Vegas .

One of the privileges one receives with 928 ownership is the enjoyment of constant adjusting, tinkering, tuning and improving a car of this age and class . The payoff comes when you insert the key, ignite the fuel, depress pedal and hang on to your hat as you put it through its paces.

In memoriam of my best animal friend and companion. Unfortunately he did not last the finishing of the 928. Wanted so bad for him to make it. He was a good boy.

Please accept my condolences for the loss of your canine friend. Why do we give these animals our hearts to tear...

~~~~~~
Stock 996/997 wheels pop up for sale all the time, you should be able to find a replacement easily. Check the 996 forum?
Thanks for the kind words. I posted to the parts wanted classifieds. Don't want to abuse the non-commerce threads let AUP. No hits from anyone.
Here's a live update from Fronkenstein's garage. January 1st 2015: Houston we have ignition or should I say "it's alive!!!"
Sorry for the lack of updates. Been caring for my rheumatoid arthritis stricken wife and other craziness. Going to take a vacation from the project until Jan 20th.
Thanks to all the supporters, cajolers, curmudgeons and lurkers for helping me keep going.
Fired her up with straight headers and you can really hear the compression firing of in those cylinders. An M28.22 lives to see the light of day one again!
Okay it's just over a year! My first post was 3/15/2014 kicking off the mechanical restore of the Poorsch - which incidentally is what my NH vanity tags say
Here's the update as of 3/17/2015:
Today was a very good day. We started her up and had some worrisome noise from under the hood. Between the awesome drone and the sweet tones of the engine alive there was an ominous knock. My brother and I were sweating it big time. I pulled all four plugs from the RH side since that is where I could swear the noise was emanating from. In desperation I put my inspection camera down each cylinder knowing the back of my mind that unless there was significant piston damage I would see nothing - and that is what I saw - nothing but clean well-burning cylinders.
Ok so we started it up again and at low idle the noise was gone. Revved it a bit and it stayed quiet. Stopped and restarted and let her run for while, revved her and the knocking was back except now it wasn't stopped at idle. Frantically I put the hose to my ear and went around the engine trying to find the source. I listed to each exhaust port, even opened a few of the cam tower inspection covers to no avail. Then I put the hose toward the back of the engine and WOW there was the noise. Immediately I had my brother step on the clutch thereby releasing it and - VOILA knocking gone!
Now mind you knocking from the clutch isn't great but its a darn sight better than a rod or wrist pin knocking! So we sighed a great sigh of relief.
We are left with two final issues:
The knocking coming from the clutch which I have deduced, without further investigation mind you, that it has to be related to the drive shaft or the drive shaft clamps interfering with something. I cannot imagine that anything internal to the clutch itself could cause this. Also as we take the pedal near to the top of its engagement is where the noise starts.
The other very annoying thing left is she will not start without me manually giving her a shot for fuel. Doesn't matter how hot or cold she is, she just will not start without a snootful. Once I give her the shot she's up and running and revving to go. So I am off in search of some 928 wisdom on both points. Mostly the non-starting issue as I am sure it could be any number of issues.
Any thoughts on the non-start issue? I am thinking "cold start valve". Not really a cold start, more like an old fashion choke.
Well I've solved the clutch ticking noise and the starting issue. As suspected the start up injector was not firing. I believe that calling it a "cold start valve" is a misnomer. It is fired regardless of temperature as far as I can tell from the schematic. The noise from the clutch is a rather embarrassing hardware mistake. A bolt that was 1mm longer than appropriate to attach the pressure plate to the flywheel was used and interfered with the starter bracket (1985 euro engine).
Now we're off to adjust the shifter linkage and take it for a ride.
