Default Mercedes 5 Speed Auto

I've searched threads in the past-but would it be possible to swap in a Mercedes 722.5?

Just curious.

It is my understanding that the housings of the transmissions used in Mercedes models are different from the housings used on the 928.

when i had my 88 S4 automatic rebuilt there literally was a 722.5 sitting right next to it....almost identical, except for about 4 more inches before the rear end.....so it would require lots of fabrication to make it fit...& the 722.5 is purely electronically controlled....unlike ours.....

But it is the same transmission that still is in all of the 65 series AMG cars with 604hp-738ftlbs!!!!!!!

The gear ratios are quite similar too, just adds a .86 overdrive

Are there 4 inches of room on the "engine side" in the rear transmission tunnel with the stock auto? If so, one would think if the rear end remains fixed, the longer 722.5 would fit?.....(wishful thinking).

Is the electronic control a regular CANBUS type or proprietary to Mercedes?

the Mercedes transmission does not bolt to the differential housing or accept the bolt on Porsche pinion gear......you are beyond "wishful thinking"

That only works if you're wearing the Ruby Slippers.

I you sure that wasn't a 722.6? I thought the 722.5 was basically a 722.4 with an added overdrive unit. The unit is electronically controlled but the rest of the transmission is hydraulic.

The 722.5 was really designed for 6 cylinder MB's and I don't think that it would be strong enough for the 928. The 722.6 however was put in the Twin Turbo CL65's and should be plenty strong. There's an outfit working on a stand alone TCU for this transmission which may provide options if you can ever make one fit. More details here:

Piranha Bros are currently developing a universal Crossmember section that will accept both GM automatics . Will work with Porsche, gm and Toyota engines.

I'm slowly getting there. Been finishing up the v12 car. However I did Picked up a 86 for a test mule last month. Waiting for the 6l80e to be delivered. Our new center section should fit both auto and manual trans. Plan on doing mockups for Porsche , GM and Toyota engines.
