# 7 Cylinder Irregularity

Spoke to Tom Charlesworth on your problem today. He says your problem is not uncommon when a steel sleeve is put in an aluminum block. The aluminum expands at a greater rate than the steel and the sleeve slowly migrates down. He also didn't think fireringing would solve the problem. So it looks like your options are to keep replacing gaskets (if you go this way try indian head gasket cement on the #7), resleeve with steel or aluminum, or replace the block or engine.

It is recessed, Looking at pictures previously taken on the first head gasket replacement, it looks flush with cylinder. Is it possible for it to move? Anyway, thanks for all that gave input. Crunch time for decision making.

The glue Dennis suggests is an idea.
Check out a similar bore copper gasket (thin) from a stang' maybe.
Just cut a section out and use a thin coat of high temp adhesive and see what happens.
Any sign of H2O in the oil?.
The heads look new compared to those of our British 928 owner.
His were blatantly corroded on block and head then etched/rusted and or blown out on and in the bore.
Jesus, what crappy set of options.
For cost's I'd go with a replacement short block or a used long block.
The pistons alone are murder, and there should be a reference to price of the sleeving and coating which was obscenely expensive.
On the other hand...
928INTL sells the shortblock for a
78' - 79' MY for around $500., long block $2000.00.
1980-82 shortblock for$500., long block $2000.00.
or
83'-84 4.7L longblock $2500.00.
For the decerning owner perhaps a sleeper 79' is what you are looking for.
Euro 4.7L 80-85 for a paltry $3500.
When you bump the price of machining and parts it's seem s to me like you could buy a running parts car - don't forget the down time and the dreaded 'Oops Factor'.
I'd go with the used engine from the Big Three shipping and all.
I believe they do a compression check and a leakdown test.

John, Since the last gasket change I have been watching the oil and breather tubes/strainer daily, nothing. The other morning when the white smoke appeared and that familiar smell, my heart sank. Haven't started it since. Still no sign of H2O/coolant in the oil. Mobil 1 is cheap! When I came home that evening, pulled the plugs, fuel pump relay and coil wire. One good thing about the engine design, you can peer into the cylinders with a mag light. I spotted coolant in old #7 again, after turning it over to bottom out the cylinders one by one, although not nearly the quanity as the first time. I did have it over the century mark recently for the first time. An 80-83 Euro S engine would be ideal, but in any case, the new paint job gets pushed back again....... I'm going to put it back together and try to get along until I can get another block/engine. Limit the driving, I'm gonna make to the Big Party this year! Keep your eyes and ears open for me, it would be much appreciated.

Ernest, I missed that one. I will email him, condition would be a gamble, but you never know. If I don't find something here in Texas, I will probably go to the Big 3, at least they will be honest about condition. Thank you for keeping me in mind, all help GREATLY appreciated.

I want say THANK YOU for all the emails and phone calls everyone made to help me out. There was some very GENEROUS offers for another engine. Would you believe $100.00 for a good engine minus the intake and water pump? I did make a purchase today (but will start another thread).
