Air pump
Greg,
I can drive without my air pump. But can you run with out yours? You know your a little older than I. Besides driving is easier than running.
Do you need an air pump? I bet I know someone with a cheap one. HMMM

Snipped my air pump belt when I installed my new Ott bypass/crossover. Runs great, better mileage and power. So..I would think the answer is yes--however, If you retain cats, I don't know if you will load or contaminate them sooner if the extra air is crucial for catalytic process.
If it were me, I would use it as an excuse to buy an Ott, remove belt, (for "testing" purposes)--saving both for swap back if/when emission testing renewal time comes.

You can run the AIR pump without CATs, but the CATs need the extra oxygen to do their thing. CATS generally load up eventually anyway, but running them without the additional oxygen would probably contributte to their demise. My '86 passes the "sniffer" test with the "test-pipe" in place. You will run into "emissions issues" if you are in a state that requires original emissions equipment be in place.
