(Another) Timing belt problem / question
Hi Guys,
I was completing a timing belt / tensioner rebuild / water pump replacement on my 16V '84 Euro and everything was going well until I attempted to put the new cam belt back on.
The problem seems to be that despite having backed the tension completely off (screw is wound right out) on the tensioner, the push rod that pushes against the tensioner roller arm, won't recess back enough to allow the belt to be guided over the roller. The push rod looks like it pokes out from the rubber boot by nearly an inch although it feels like it is correctly located.
I haven't changed the order of the washers in the tensioner (they are still in 7 sets of 5), although I did remove them to replace the o-ring on the piston. I filled the unit with oil after bolting it to the block, but before I attempted to put the belt on. This seemed contrary to a guide I read later on which suggested 1/3 rd fill of the tensioner first.
I really can't figure out why this damn tensioner won't back off!

Well, perhaps I was hasty in posting this question. I took the tensioner assembly apart again and reinserted it. Success!! I am now able to get it recess enough to move the idler pulley back far enough to get the belt on.
Not sure exactly what was what was wrong, but seems like the washer assembly wasn't fully seated in the tensioner properly.
Now to reassemble and do the timing belt shuffle!

Good. Even with everything correct, I often have to do some straining and tricks to get the belt onto the second cam gear. And getting it on the right tooth can be tricky.
