Tutorial on how to read the PET?
Has anyone ever done such a guide? I'm trying to use PET as I work on Alan's DRAFT 1983 US CE Panel chart and I'm not sure I'm getting it right.
I think I might be OK but I'd be greatly reassured with a "For instance, this means that ..." and "This is how you tell it's for a '86 ..." from somebody that knows what they're doing and can explain the columns, model year breaks and running changes, superceded parts and so forth.

Will - that would be a very long and in-depth tutorial and it would change with every update of PET. It has taken me years of working with PET all day and every day to fully understand it. Even then it beats me up here and there 8>).

Everything I know about using PET is from just messing around with it, lots of places to left-click or right-click and see what happens. Worst case, it locks up and you start over, no harm no foul. If you have, say, PET 7.1 or 7.2, start with the MENU button and explore through the drop-down menu for search functions, the V-pages (which contain explanations for a lot of the letter codes used in certain columns of a particular part's listing), engine and tranny codes, etc.
The one button I use the most is the binocular icon, which goes to advanced search, which has 5 tabs for different ways to search- Term (AKA 'keyword'), part #, parts usage, etc. Parts usage searches are great for figuring out the year-range a particular part # was used, and possibly what other model Porsches that part was used on.
In each parts diagram, the numbers for a given part are all hyperlinked, left-clicking the number highlights the parts description in the right side of the screen, right-clicking gets you to the binocular 'search' functions.
Just gotta play with it.

Be aware there is PET and then there are PET .pdfs - these are very different... (but based off the same data). It may be easier to start with the .pdf version - less you can do for sure but less to go wrong and less you need to know.... for the purposes of comparing the CE panel diagrams it is sufficient IMO.

Thanks, everybody. You've boosted my confidence.
That said, I _am_ using the .pdf version rather than the "program." I think I know what I'm doing, but the page headings and columns of numbers are still kinda confusing to me.
Nice to know it's an OJT project, b/c the more I noodle around and stare at it, the more I notice what I hope is a glimmer of understanding.
The one I'm using is:
928_USA_83_86_KATALOG.PDF (5.83MB)
http://www.porsche.com/all/media/pdf...86_KATALOG.pdf
Which I got to through this link that Alan posted the other day:

Here are a couple of screen grabs of the V-pages from PET 7.3, which serve as the 'map legend' for each of the symbols used in various columns of the individual parts diagram pages:
