Default Sunroof Challenge

Hello 928 Gurus,

When I bought my '84 Shark it was advertised as not having a working sunroof (what a surprise, right?). I took it apart and realized that the square, black connector that travels on the driver's side cable was missing it's outer guide pin. In addition, the sunroof seals were dried out and there was a small (1/2in) gap between the front & rear seals. The sunroof actually operated because the passenger side was still connected up to the cable so as long as you helped the motor by pulling/pushing the driver's side as needed it was fine. Even so, it could never be fully closed properly 100% because the roof wouldn't do that final movement where it pushes "up" and flush with the roofline.

I ordered 2 new cables and both new seals and had at it last weekend. I successfully removed the roof and replaced both cables and seals thanks to write ups from awesome posts on this board and others. Well, the roof operates perfectly on it's own with no help now *except* it's STILL not doing that final 1/4in movement "up" (see pic of car roof to see what I mean if needed). I've tried pushing, pulling, adjusting, etc to no avail. I'm at a loss here. In addition, it hits the wind deflector as it's closing (but will close fine if the deflecor is held down).

Please help by piping in if you don't mind ... I've gotten 95% of the way there and I'd love to finish it successfully. I love the sunroof option, so leaving it closed isn't an option for me.

Many thanks,

Josh

Well, I'm a long way from being a guru, but I've BTDT with the sunroof.

You have 2 separate problems. The deflector issue is probably the guide shoes. They are little plastic lumps that go on the end of the slide (the black piece that goes across under the roof itself. They push down on the arms of the deflector and make it go down below the lip of the sunroof. They break easily and if one or both is gone, the deflector won't go down far enough.

The sunroof not going up into "fully closed" is in part because you have the gate guide in backwards. I can see it in the second pic. It's the part that the 2 bolts and the screw go into on the side. The channel that curves up at the end should be on the outside. There's a pin that fits in that channel, and when the sunroof is all the way forward, the pin continues and cams the roof up.

Getting the guide piece (the part attached to the cable) to fit up into the slot it's supposed to go into is rather "fiddly." It took me a few attempts to get it "just right." It's adjusted by loosening up the Phillips head screw and moving the part with the slot around.

Dan The Pod Guy had the best site (kondaretyev or something like that). Unfortunately, the site shut down when he died. I think someone has a copy saved, but I don't know who, or where it can be found.

The copy of the PET that I have doesn't show a lot of detail on these little parts, but it does have the correct names. It's illustration 811-05, page 365.

Hope this helps.

Thank you so much for your help! Truthfully, I didn't even know that there were guide shoes for the end of the slide. Funny enough, my buddy who was helping me found some "desintigrated plastic" on the outside of the passenger side sunroof track. We didn't know what it was ... based on your description below, I think I do now! Does anyone even sell those?!

Now, for the second issue, you mentioned that the gate guide is backwards based on the 2nd pic. I primarily used this write-up to install everything (about halfway down):

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsc...s-fixes-2.html

Either I'm confused about the part that you're referring to or something else is wrong. The pic that I posted is my driver's side and the write-up is primarily the passenger side, but the shoes only seem to fit one way. I've attached a pic of what I think you're referring to (passenger side).

Could this be because of the thickness of the new front seal by chance?

Sorry for any confusing terms and thanks again for your help!

Ok, you may have it in the correct way. Is there another channel in the other side like the one that is visible in the pic? That is what the guide piece (the part attached to the cable) runs in.
Once the pin in the guide piece moves past the cam point and the sunroof drops,, the square part that sticks out (visible on the back side opposite the Phillips screw) locks into the guide piece and makes the sunroof move back.

It's possible the seal is too big. You should be able to push the sunroof into the hole without too much effort if it isn't connected to anything.

Does anyone have Dan The Pod Guy's writeup saved anywhere? It had pics that show what I'm talking about. It's what I used to go through mine and it was really clear.

The guide shoes for the deflector show as part no 928 564 268 03. You can call the "Usual Suspects" and see if they are available (If you don't know who I mean, read the "New Visitor" sticky and look for the "Big 4').

Hi Gents,

Thank you so much for your help! It is greatly appreciated. That write-up should give me all of the information that I need.
