New ones are 999 701 006 40. Not sure I'd replace with a generic rubber here, the proper ones are soft and crush, as you've seen. Begs the question of _why_ they're so soft...

Cheap, at $1.50 a pop:

There's some "back story" to these o-rings.

Because this is the same o-ring that a 911 uses to seal the crankcase through bolts, there has been more than a few supercessions, over the years. The updates were not because the o-rings were used in the 928 model, but because they were used in the 911 model and leaked, in this application.

Originally, the o-rings were rubber (of some type), changed to a silicone based o-ring, and eventually became Viton. All of this happened during the 928's lifetime, so disassembly of these engines will reveal all three types...in various colors.

Do yourself a favor and buy the Viton ones.

BTW....they are 2mm x 8mm.

Rats, I wanted to say they were Viton, but wasn't 100% sure.

IIRC, all the crushed ones I've seen during disassembly are blue, I could swear that the last set I got were red (?)

The blue ones are usually the silicone based material.

Viton are generally red, green, or black....I have all three of those colors and have been tempted, at times, to mix all three, just to blow the mind of the guy that removes them the next time.

Being so severely ****, I can't bring myself to do this, and always use the same color.

Sometimes OCD really gets in the way of having fun!

Put that in post #3, along with a bunch of crap you didn't want to know.

thanks guys.seems like the main oil pump o ring is only rubber.bolt o rings should hold up against motor oil.i am gonna try to find the blue but I don't want to wait to order them so automotive rubber rings may have to do.

Remember to use the correct cup washers - we sell the O rings for $1.
