Default understanding your PET

I have 2 86 5.0L ROW 928s, both Australian delivered.
Looking up parts, using VIV search, in the PET is often a real challenge because it either says 83-86 or 86-89, so you don't know which one, or it will list 16v parts.
Examples; look up brakes or front suspension parts. look up oil filler and breather hoses and as I'm currently doing, look up wiring harnesses.
It's bad enough trying to get RHD specific info, usually prefixed by 927 instead of 928.
I'm trying to repair engine bay wiring harnesses and it shows an ignition module single distributor and single coil like my 81S.
It does have a 927 part number for 86 in the list of 16 part numbers for this loom and a reference to 'see technical document '9-NR.1/86' but I can't find out anything about that.

What others do to sort out this confusion from S to S4 models?

The older of my 86S cars came from the factory with an S4 hatch. It had S spoilers and holes for the S4 spoiler with rubber plugs in them. The younger 86S had the hatch with no holes for S4 type spoiler.

For the '86 model you need to use vin number. if after 1000 (late '86) then is '86.5 and some s4 part may apply. if earlier then use '83-86 (early '86) If when using PET you see the part you need, go to the nest page also. Early year shows first.

This is how I bought a set of new timing gears. If I had looked on page further I would have seen they were for 16 valve car.

VIN after 1000 only applied to USA delivered cars. All ROW 86 cars - both 16v and 32 v had the S4 additions.

Mike - what version of PET are you using? Are you in the ROW section as opposed to "local" which often means USA/Canada.

The wiring harness is 928 007 002 10 for your car but I am pretty sure it is NLA (I can check tomorrow).

I live on PET all day and everyday so tell me what you are specifically looking for and I will try and help.

PET is a PITA and you have to think like a German and know where to look for all the parts that are not where you think they should be.

VIN search is practically useless for the early cars like the 928. In fact it has now been removed from PET. It is great when I am looking for a part on a 996 or Cayenne but not much use on a 928.

Roger,
I use 7.3 and I've stopped updates beyond 306, that's where the VIN filter colours stopped and for this car [which is the one you have been sending my most recent parts] it is GS841622.
The harness we have to repair/replace is shown as 927.612.001.04, with the VIN filter active but as you can see on that page it is a 4.7 picture. So what you ask?
Well, I'm not in the market for a new harness at over $2k and most of it is very good and the nearest I could get was a harness from an Aussie delivered 87, so it's RHD. This is shown as 927.612.001.06, with the VIN filter active but it doesn't cover the front fan or intensive washer and probably much more.
What we are calculating, is can we use the 87 harness and add what's missing, or do we amputate the damaged [burnt] ends and that's all we are talking here, the ends, about a foot, of the 86 looms near the top of the motor and use the 87 to cut up for wires and plugs.
ps, I also use PET 7.0 a lot because I can't get 7.3 to install on my 64bit systems.

Ok, now I understand why PET is so easy and convenient to use for me, what a great tool!
Could not live without it anymore

@ramcram
I run PET 7.3 on my Windows 8.1 64 bit laptop. You need to install a virtual machine and set it to XP 32 bit for example. Works like a charm...

Mike,
OK I am with you now - engine bay harness - correct on the part number for a RHD 32v car - 927 612 001 04. There is also the adapter 928 612 033 00 which may be for the euro style repeater lights on the wings or connects to the central electric.
I think the 87 will be a PITA because of the large differences 86 to 87 and that you would be better with a 85/86 32v LHD harness. Think about the differenced between RHD & LHD as far as this harness is concerned? The only items that are different are the expansion tank and the brake master. That would mean extending these cables to reach the other side of the car. Other than that they seem the same. Does this harness link to the central electric panel? That could be the main concern due to yours being on the left side. That may be the adapter cable 928 612 033 00??
The 927 612 001 04 harness is available and $1200 - still not cheap I know.
I am pretty sure I have an 86 32v LHD harness in the shop we can look at. If it works I would be happy to give it to you.

Roger,
That is a very kind offer and I would have said yes instantly but I have just bought 20kg of 87 looms.
This loom [86 & 87] does connect to M,N,O, & P on the CE board, so fitting the LHD one would not work.
Interestingly, I had a spare US LHD engine loom [injectors etc] and it fits RHD perfectly, right though to the computers.
My plan was to graft good wires onto the burnt loom, using the 87 for supply of the correct colour and wire gauge. This would be much easier with your 86 LHD loom for sure but I would still have to get it here.
Mike
